Rabbi Lederman Stikes Again!

G-D is sitting in heaven when a scientist says to Him, "G-d, we don't need you anymore. Science has finally figured out a way to create life out of nothing. In other words, we can now do what you did in the beginning."

"Oh, is that so?" replies G-D.

"Yes," says the scientist, "we can take dirt and form it into the likeness of You and breathe life into it, thus creating man."

"Well, that's Me."

So the scientist bends down to the earth and starts to mold the soil.

"No, no, no..." interrupts G-D, "get your own dirt."

The Grateful Trio

Tonight the Grateful Trio will be performing again at the Indian Road Cafe in Inwood in northern Manhattan. We do mostly Dead tunes but some others like Neil Young and Neil Goldstein.

The lead singer (who also plays guitar) is a real Dead Head. He is really into the meaning of the lyrics and sees the Dead as almost a religion. I suppose it can be seen as a type of new age secular religion. But it is not really a religion.

It is very hard to create a religion. Jim Jones tried and ended up killing himself and all his followers. Way to go Jim!

It's pretty impressive when you look at the following that Joseph Smith still has after over 100 years. The Mormons are a large and growing group and this year they had a strong presidential contender, Mitt Romney. Other more recent groups seem to be hanging on like the Pentacostals, the Seventh Day Adventists, and the Jehovah Witnesses.

The Seventh Day Adventists have the least catchy name. One guy says, I'm a Jew. The next says, I'm a Catholic. The next says, I'm a Seventh Day Adventist. It does not roll off the tongue. But it could be worse. How about, I'm a Seventh Day Sixth Month Third Hour Adventist Pentacostal Witness. Now that's a name!

What do I mean?

I have heard many people say that the Bible speaks of a god who is an old bearded man who lives in the sky. But that is a total misunderstanding of the anthropomorphisms used in the Bible.

When the Bible speaks of God in human terms that is only as a way for us to understand Him, but it in no way is meant to be taken as an actual description of Him. God told Moses that He is unknowable and not to be seen. There is a story in the Torah when Moses was up on Mt. Sinai where God speaks to Moses "face to face", but even there He tells Moses to avert his eyes since no one can see God and live. So if that is the case, how can we say that God is a strong young man of fury, or a wise old bearded sage? These are only images to explain how we see Him, not images of what He really is.

So if one is going to try to discredit the Bible by saying it posits God as a man in the sky, this person only discredits himself by showing his lack of knowledge. If one wants to discredit the Bible there are ways, but most people who try to discredit it don't know enough to even know how!

Give credit where credit is due!

People may try to discredit the Bible but that does not mean it's been discredited. To really discredit something you first have to show that you understand it. Only then can you have the background to know whether or not it is valid. The problem with most of the Bible critics is that they do not have a deep understanding of it. As it turns out, most people who do have a deep understanding of it praise it. And, in fact, there are many Orthodox Jewish scientists who see the Bible (the Hebrew scriptures) as containing many ideas that have been verified by science.

Anyway, I have two new videos up about my book, Beyond Faith. In these I go over the table of contents and talk a little bit about what each chapter contains. Even so it took two ten minute videos to just get through that!

dis credit problem

the bible is already discredited BY SCIENCE as is science discredited by religious folk.
dont wait 4 an obama like day wen religion is declares wrong...yes we can!
it happens in invisible ways as wen tv personalities say its bull, wen governments say its separate,.
discredited by whom?

Just who has this discredit card?

is it visa.cred

or is it master card.inal

Solemnly Relatively Swear

If the Bible gets discredited and science turns out to be the path to truth, then perhaps people will swear on Einstein's Theory of Relativity. It would also make sense to quote from it at marriage ceremonies since the whole idea of marriage is for two people to become relative.

Now yer thinkin'!

Good ideas! I love when people look at things in new ways. Sure, why not have a science wedding and get married by a scientist. Surely many of them would know even better than a rabbi or a priest what life is really all about! The question is, what kind of scientist would you want? An astonomer may have lofty ideas but be too spacey. A physicist would know the ins and outs but may be be too touchy.

It's about time, it's about space...

What do I mean, you ask?

If there are multiple universes then clearly there are whole universes that exist beyond our universe's laws of physics. Therefore they exist beyond space and time. So if universes can exist beyond space and time, surely so could God.

Now, not only are there an infinite number of universes, but there is space between them! What do you call that space? Is that a universe in and of itself? A universe of universes? And are there an infinite number of those?

Doesn't this make your brain hurt! It's great to be conscious, but one of the drawbacks is that you realize how very little you actually know!

What do you call someone who was once a worshipper of science but has become a non-beliver? A Sciatheist!

(Get it? Science + Atheist = Sciatheist.)

It is becoming harder to say, "I don't belive in religion. I believe in science". The two are becoming one. After all, one of the main purposes of religion is to explain everything ... how did we get here?, what are we? where are we going? And now science is engaged in the same endeavor.

I saw a great video about M Theory and parallel universes. I bet most people don't even realize that science has moved past the big bang theory into a "theory of everthing" which postulates an infinite number of universes all existing at the same time!

The question still remains: who created these infinite number of universes, or were they always there? Actually this theory seems right in line with the Jewish concept of God as something that exists beyond time and space.

sounds wierd

Oh, life is bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no, I've said too much
I set it up

That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight, I'm
Losing my science
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
