| Been a long time, but I could use your help
Hello Aaron and all on the V.C. guestbook here - Edward from WWPV. It has been a long time since I posted anything here but I come back to the guestbook with a favor to ask of you, and it has a particular holiday flair to it. I am currently looking to expand WWPV's selection of music for Hanukkah so I can accommodate my listeners around who may not be Christian during the holidays. I come to you with a question which should help guide my search: what material would you as a Jew find offensive in terms of music for Hanukkah or other Jewish holidays? Are there any specific genres in which you would not want to hear traditional and original music for Hanukkah? I guess I'm looking for you to tell me what you would NOT want to hear so I can weed that out and pick up the good stuff. (I am looking mainly at CDBaby's stock, searching under the word "Jewish").
Maybe you should know the Station already has a few albums by Jewish reggae singer Matisyahu, plus Jewish rock group The Leevees with "Hanukkah Rocks", and another Jewish reggae outfit by the name of Adonai and I. In my own collection I have two Hanukkah compilations: "This is Chanukkah" and "A Chanukkah Celebration".
Can you help a gentile out here?
I hope everyone's well, and that your holidays are merry how ever you celebrate. In turn, I wish you a successful, prosperous, happy and healthy New Year. We've got a new president, so maybe with that will bring a new economy, and a new respect for America around the world. Time will tell.
Happy Holidays all,

| Fitna - by Dutch MP Geert Wilders
Oh yes, sure I saw it, in fact its expected and feared aftermath (that didnot materialise) was just discussed some days ago in a TV program, as our "national coordinator terrorism-fighting" is on his way out of office.
Intrigueing is, after all these months (Fitna was released in March), still Wilders' way of bringing his message is discussed (esp. in parliament) rather than the message itself.
I've just read up on Moslims who left their faith and became atheist or christian (an extremely bold decision for those in living a moslim country), a.o. here:
Ali Sina - Why he left Islam
The testimony of a former convert to Islam
A former professor of Islamic history who became a christian
. Studying this and the related question "Is the God of Abraham, Yitschak and Ya'acov the same as Allah?" (for sure not) and, for that matter, why half of the US citizens are so happy with Obama - has kept me from stopping by here.

| Welcome Back
Hey LN, great to hear from you again. Actually I just saw a short movie created by a man from Holland called Fitna. Have you seen it? If not you can watch it on Google video. It's about Islam and focuses on Holland in particular. Very interesting.
The post about the Jewish blood in so many Spanish and Portueguese people is amazing. I wonder what impact this will have. One can only imagine the suffering those familes went through who were virtually forced to convert. If these people find out that they are legally Jewish by Jewish law will they embrace this or are they so aculturated into Catholicism or perhaps atheism that Judaism would still feel foreign? Anyway, this is the guestbook at its best - when people post links or articles about things that the rest of us probably didn't know.
As to Mahler's 9th, in many ways that is my favorite, although I love the #'s 1, 2, 5, 7, and Das Lied too. Mahler believed if he finished a 9th symphony he would die, just as Beethoven died after his 9th, so he called his actual 9th symphony Das Lied Von de Erde. Then he composed what he called his 9th symphony, which is all about coming to terms with death. It is a totally amazing peace once you realize what it is about.
Well, Mahler lived through his 9th and decided to start a 10th. He didn't get through one movement before he died! So the moral of the story is...
| More hidden Jews
Been away for too long - great link for the Mahler 9, somehow never sat down to listen to this symphony yet, so now I did, and this perf. is amazing, thanks! The young cellist - haha, he's really into it, I love that! Oh, and, 'er, it was actually a viola-solo in the jungle! Not saying you never heard a viola solo, right?
The humour post was the best !

I first discovered this piece toward the end of high school. To me it was classical music's answer to Dark Star by the Grateful Dead. It really takes you on a trip.
And don't forget part II:
And part III:
And for a special treat, check out the end of the symphony with Bernstein conducting and explaining the meaning behind the music.

I sent this link to a bunch of friends and colleagues. He's gotten almost 200 hits, probably because of me! But its great. I get such a kick out of seeing kids play my pieces.
One violinist I played with this week said she enjoyed the link but didn't realize he was playing my music. I guess she didn't listen to him speaking at the beginning. I explained that that was why I sent her the link. Then she says, "Are you famous?"
At this point in my career I have several repeating gigs. Last night was one. I have played for the Cannon Holiday Party for probably twenty years! It was not as upbeat as usual, probably due to the economy. But I always enjoy going out to Long Island and watching the people party. They seem to really get into it out there.
I do sometimes wonder though how I can have people playing my music all over the world, yet I am still playing parties in Long Island catering halls!

What did you ever do to get favors for Israel? And where did you hear that Israel gets all its aid up front? I think you are living in a fantasy ... but it is funny, I'll grant you that.
By the way, if you listen to Israel National Radio on line, you will find out that there are religious Jews who would like the U.S. to stop giving aid to Israel, because with the aid comes strings attached. Don't forget the U.S. has still not moved its embassy to Jerusalem, the capitol of Israel, and politicians in the U.S. have called for the division of Jerusalem and other things that strike at the heart and soul of the country. I've heard religious people say that the Jews survived for thousands of years before there was a United States and Jewish survival is not based on American guns, but on the God of Israel. Israel will survive with or without American money.
| BE PROUD
our people even me in 1983 worked hard so that today israel is the only country that gets ALL its annual usa help at once, not in drips as ALL other countris get it.
Israel gets less than the arabs cause the arab countries are more in need. Im happy israel is less in need and thus gets less. A more needy israel is bad for israel
To say israel gets no Special favors is to negate all the hard work done by jews around the usa. We work hard to get israel every favor every extra?? possible and we are very good at it.
DONT be ashamed that israel gets specials that others dont get and i dont know why you juxtapose israel to the arab countris..why not to canada or africa?
Be proud that israel is the only one getting its money upfront.
Be proud israel is the only one getting usa military equippment upfront
Be proud that your country ISRAEL gets lots of special favors cause our lobby is strong, correct, and knows the game..
the day israel stops getting attacked is the day the usa will stop the extra special treatment it gets and its the day israel will get attacked
ergo..the day israel stops getting attacked is the day it will be attacked
| IRON MAN
Now, just ten hits away from moving ahead of Herbie's Pizza Party!
| Dear Misinformed
The whole notion that Israel gets "special favors" is wrong. Do you know that Egypt gets the same amount of aid as Israel? And the Arab world in total gets more aid than Israel. Look what America sacrificed in WW II to save England and France. Yet I don't see Spanish newspapers saying that the capitol of England is Liverpool, or the capitol of France is Nice.
Anyway, today I was back in your old borough, Brooklyn. I played once again for the students of NYU Polytech: the school whose professors brought you the microwave, the lazar, plastics, the zoom lens .... and the doo-hickie!
I was on stage with a violinist from the Leningrad Philharmonic and a violinist who used to tour the world. We played classical hits like Pachelbel Cannon and the Boccerini Minuet. To the audience I was Mr. Classical Cellist. But a few days ago I was Mr. Cellorock Guy when I jammed with a guitarist for a store opening in Murray Hill. Tomorrow I'll be Mr. Clubdate as a play for a wedding at a seaside restaurant in Long Island. Very few people have a musical career as diverse as mine.
the day when israel has no detractors no people debating its capitol.its economy its right..is the day it will stop being seen as under threat of attack. Its the day when the us congress will say.Israel has arrives,,no more special favors like getting usa military help. money from congress which other countris get but not in that proportion and the benefit of the doubt in many circumstances.
I for one hope israel forever has these problems so it forever gets the extras that jews need to keep israel alive.I hope its capitol is never agreed on, its neighbors never give up and it always has enemies..Keep the hate coming..it fuels israels special priviledges special relation with the usa and the handicap it gets from powerful people.
i say its capitol is really in haifa.
| Detractors, Bad Actors
It is crazy though, when you think about it. Is there another country which has newspapers lying about where it's capitol is located? The way people pick on Israel is really sick.
who are theses detractors you mention?
we need more tractors in israel?
