The Trouble With Kerry

The recent flap over Kerry's comment that "if you don't study hard you end up in Iraq" demonstrates one of the big problems with the Democrats. We all know that the Dems have policies that are more helpful to the poor and middle class than the Repubs. We also know that the Repubs push through a lot of laws that favor the rich. Yet many poor or lower middle class people, especially white people, see the Dems as elitist and the Repubs for the common man.

How do the Repubs do that? Even though they are rich, a lot of them are business people, and business people know how to reach out to the common man because that is where the money is. If you can get everyone in America to give you $5, you end up with over a billion dollars! So smart business reaches out to the general consumer. Many Dems are highly educated people from upper middle class or rich familes (like the Kennedys). They think that they can reach out to the lower classes by proposing programs that will benefit them. But they don't speak their LANGUAGE!

Listen to the way Bush speaks. He is not a redneck from Texas. He went to Yale for crying outloud! But he sure as hell speaks Texan. Listen to Kerry. He sounds like he never stepped out of upper crust New England. The common man out in the heartland gets turned off and feels that a Kerry does not understand him. He doesn't even want a hand out from a Kerry. He'd rather slug it out and look up to a Bush, thinking that one day he may become a Bush.

So, the bottom line is that the party of the rich is the one that the lower class whites feel most comfortable with. As Kerry's comment shows: you can be very book smart and an idiot when it comes to life!

Where is the youth?

Thanks for reminding me of that quote! At the time I think I was wondering how the youth allowed the corporations to so control their musical taste that shows like American Idol could become the biggest thing, while there are virtually no young instrumental heros like Hendrix, Zappa, Tull, or Garcia.

The trouble with any kind of electronic voting is that the results can be altered by anyone who is good at hacking. That is why there should always be a paper trail. If there is doubt about a result people can count the paper ballots. You see, after that crazy election in Florida where it was hard to tell from the paper ballots how people had voted, depending on whether the "shads" were hanging or punched all the way through, they should have created better paper ballots. Instead cynical people tried to move to electronic ballots, knowing full well that electronic results can be altered.

It seems that the "powers that be" are now so smart that "the youth" don't have a chance at really opposing or affecting the government. They are so caught up in trying to be cool in various ways that they don't have the concentration to do much politically. And anyway, I don't know how aware of things kids can be. I look at the world much differently today than I did when I was in college. I think I am much smarter now because I have had many years to observe things. One of my favorite quotes is from Churchil who said something like, "If a young person is not liberal he has no heart. If an old person is not conservative he has no brains".

Zappa: "Questions, Questions, flowing from the mindsof concerned youth

But if we do away with electronic voting, how else are we going to encourage the young people to "rock the vote", as it were. If we could get the entire population of legal young voters in just one state to vote hopnest ly and truefully then I think we'd be ree-assured that democracy still thrives in the land of the free. Of course if this electronic voting is done on-lkine thenb there is the possiblity that the youth might abuse this right, just as hundreds are doing with myspace and facebook.com. We must ask ourselves, are the youth in this country ready and mature enough to make an honset vote, or has the internet deprived them of moral decency? I mean, if electronic voting methods make use of the "Write-In" space that paper ballots have, is some young, pimply kid in the sticks going to write in his best friend, (who by the way isn't qualified for public office of anykind)......or will he just write names like "Amanda Hugginkiss", or "Seamour Butts"?
Here we come back to one of my favorite lines from Aaron Minsky: "Where is the Youth"?

Hack Smack

There have been years when it is discovered that the SAT test has been stolen and sold to certain people. They get caught. But what about the years nobody knows the test was stolen?

Yes, I think many people here too believe that the presidencial elections were stolen, but there too, the Dems showed themselves to be wuses, because they let it happen, and didn't fight hard after the fact to have it investigated. This electronic voting is VERY scary. You can get a computer to do anything.

There MUST be a paper trail. But I don't see this becoming a big enough issue. It is at the very core of whether or not we will have a democracy, but it's hard to organize a million man march with people carrying signs that say, "NO ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES!"

to hack with the vote!!

or maybe it was won by way of commando electionday maneuvers
fixing the machines, blocking poor voters, ambiguous voting papers benifiting a partcular party.
its a bif step wen people openly talk about these issues..it makes the world begin to see the usa as no longer the home of freedom and democracy and fair elections.I mean in europe after bush won people began talking about the end of worldwide democracy as the us entered into what they called here banana politics..Its still better in my usa than anywhere else but wenbush won by a point in florida where the machines were fuktup and jebs there it made me think "wow, the one thing we had was our elections but now what?" maybe the dems need to go commando. Whoever thought about winning an election by tampering with the voting box,or just changing the grades AFTER the test. Makes me think that maybe even the sat is tampered with so certain monied folks kids get in .

Nasty Politics

Every political season gets nasty, but this is one of the worst I've seen. The Republicans are looking for every chance to peg the Dems as weak, wanting to "cut and run", etc. Unfortunately, John Kerry made a comment that gave them some fodder for their nastiness. But he hit back hard...at least as hard as someone like him knows how. He should have hit back harder.

Congressman Rangel called the Vice President a "son of a bitch" after Chenney said that Rangel knows nothing about the economy. This is good. The Democrats are finally striking back. Maybe Bill Clinton opened the door when he bit back hard on Chris Wallace during his recent interview.

I don't support many of the Democratic ideas, but I really don't like the personal attack tactics the Repubs use. It is refreashing to see Dems fighting back hard. Maybe if they stop acting like "wooses" people will start believing that they actually have the "cohones" to run the country.

The president of the United States has to not only appeal to the tea drinking crowd. He has to also strike fear into the hearts of people like Kim Jung Il, Ahmadinijad, and Bin Laden. It is the lack of faith in the strength of Democrats that has let Bush win two elections (plus some voter fraud). So the Dems got what they deserved. And the people got what they deserved.

Actually, I am waiting to get the footage from when I was on Queens Public Television. I played Iron Man on the cello with these people going crazy behind me. I'm supposed to get a copy soon. If that comes through, that would be a great thing to put on You Tube. It's just crazy enough to become one of those William Ho, or Numa Numa moments.

They say that Al Qaeda is now on You Tube. There is a lot of prospecting for suicide bombers going on on line. Now they say the pentagon is looking into getting their position on line. Coming soon...the U.S.Army on You Tube.

First I have to upgrade my computer so I can get a browser that will let me watch You Tube! I feel like I'm so 20th Century. I only have email and basic high speed internet access, but I can't get some of the new video stuff yet.

If all goes according to plan I'm supposed to have a Von Cello rehearsal tonight for the big NYC Marathon gig this Sunday.

Zealous

Well, zealots of any stripe will fight harder than those who don't care as much. The Nazis were non religious zealots. I don't know if the belief in God is as important as the zealousness, no matter how it is inspired. But other things, intangilbles, come into play. Like how we got the A bomb before Hitler. It could have been the other way around. The fact that it was not the other way is one of those things that makes me think there is a force (God?) that watches over the human race. There is freedom, but it is possible that at key moments there is intervention.

Hey, yesterday I played at the Brooklyn Museam. It's always nostalgic to take a trip back to Brooklyn, especially when I see mothers with children, and I realize that another generation is growing up there...even though were are not.

Au Contraire Mon Frere

I think what we have seen is the opposite. The Arabs were terrible fighters when their armies were made up of people who were forced by dictators and kings to fight. The didn't believe in what they were fighting for, and so they gave up quickly and ran for the hills. But look at Afghanistan and Iraq. There we are facing armies of religious zealots who believe they are doing God's will. They do not give up. They do not run. They fight to the death, and are happy to die.

Over time...and I mean decades or centuries, the Muslims will eventually get most of the technology that the west has. At that time, the winner of the ultimate war between east and west will be the one who believes in his cause the most.

i think that most israelis, especially the leaders are not jewish in terms of the religion but are jewish, as i am, non believers. Thats why they are not bound by any biblical ideas of right and wrong. They make great fighters defenders cause they are not god believers while the other side, the lebanese the plo, are believers and that crews them up. peoplewho believe arelimited and think a magic power will protect.
In war leave god out and believers make bad fighters but great human bombs.

Good God!

China - My father told me when I was a kid that China was the sleeping giant and when it woke the whole world would change. This is already happening. The problem with China is that it is not a democracy, and it aligns with, and supports, other dictatorships. So it is virtually inevitable that we will come into conflict with China. It's only a question of when.

Gods - This is a complicated subject but I'll try to make a few quick points. Of course, there is only one God, at least sccording to monotheism, so officially Jews, Christians and Muslims all worship the same God (the one who created the universe, etc.) But where things get weird is that each group puts attributes on God that contradict the other group's beliefs.

The Christians separate the one God into three parts, the trinity. This is something that Jews and Muslims don't accept. They are really into that concept of one undivided God. In fact, the Koran says, "God forbid that Jesus was God, God is God". Some see Greek influence in the Christian concept. The Greeks had gods that looked like men, so it was only natural that they would desire to change the Jewish concept of an unknowable, unseeable, God into something easier for the Greek mind to comprehend. Whereas, the semites, both Jewish and Muslim, relate to the original concept.

But that is where the Jewish and Muslims similarities end. In many ways, the Muslims attribute things to God that are the opposite of the Jewish view. As I mentioned before, Jews believe that God is the epitome of morality. As such, He would never condone the killing of innocent people in His name. He even stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac. This was a great demonstration that He was not like the false gods of the middle east that demanded human sacrifice. Yet the Muslims created a god that once again delights in the killing of innocents. When a Muslim walks into a pizza parlor and blows himself up while killing dozens of innocent men, women and children, and blows the arms and legs off of many more, leaving people with scars and burns that may never heal, the Muslims dance in the streets and call the man a saint and a hero! This is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what Jews believe God wants. So, even though there is only one God, it is as if they worship another god.

Two points of interest.....

First of all, why would the US go to war with China? I thought it was North Korea we were worried about. If I'm not mistaken, China is our most important and vital trading partner, but they've proabaly got as many WMDs as N. Korea does.
Second - in what way, Aaron, is Allah different then the Jewish God? Muslims belive that their God was responcible for creation of the universe, right? As do the Catholics and Christians, unless one's an evolutionist, that is. Almost evey faith has at least one creation myth. Also, Catholics and Christians alike understand God through the Holy Trinity, which is God in Three "Persons": God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Saint. Patrick, of course, explained this to the Celtic tribes in Ireland with a shamrock.

But that part about Canada becoming the next super power....I've been thinking about moving to Canada, so that wouldn't be so bad. Germany might not be a bad place to live either....They have polka music, sausage and beer, (as does Canada). Yeah, Germany might be a good place to live, that is unless the Nazi party makes a comeback, but I don't think it's likely that something like that is possible.
Other countries I wouldn't mind living in:

Ireland, Scotland, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Iceland (I'm a Vermonter so I could stand the cold), Australia or Italy.

Peace = War

Sometimes it seems to me that the people that want peace are the ones that perpetuate war. As you said, if I can dicipher your English, in order to have complete peace you would have to have the whole world controlled by one power. But then there would be splits within that power, and we'd be back to war. So there really cannot be such a thing as true peace.

Hitler wanted peace, the Russian Communists wanted peace, and the Islamo-fascists want peace. In all cases they felt that peace would only come when THEY controlled the world. So, one could conclude that peace is not obtainable, and in fact, not even desirable.

Meanwhile, it is a chilly, windy, rainy, nasty day here in New York, and I'm wondering how this gig is going to work tonight at Lincoln Center...considering that they want us to play outside! Will there never be peace?!!!

the only true peace is if one power controls al....then over time thatpower forksout as brothers fight and divide and clans form and then u have 2 powers fighting. Inotherwords one power contriling all is stagnant and would not work....the nature is that constant struggle is the way
viva la fight!!!!
