This "City", that "City"

Hey TJ, long time no see!

Starret City under new ownership! It's the end of an era. I always felt bad for people who lived there. It seemed like an oversized, impersonal, island of it's own. But, according to that article, a lot of people found ways to make it comfortable and maybe even preferable to other possibilites in that price range.

Personally, I like the idea of having a house. The whole idea of living in apartments always struck me as strange. A bunch of people crammed together with shared walls, and hallways, doormen, all seems so corporate. I always had that "American Dream" of having my own land and house. But there can be something cool about apartment living, especially if you are high up and have a great view. I guess Starret City did offer that to some people. And it seems that it may have held up better in some ways than the row houses we grew up in. I wish the people there the best, but I could not see myself living there.

Starrett City

I knew a family that lived in Starrett City back in the 1970's. It seemed like a decent place to live, but I had a feeling that it was destined to go downhill. I didn't realize that all of Canarsie was destined to go downhill...

Wowie Zowie!

"Did you say you want some more? Well, here's some more!" - Frank Zappa

Yes, a third version of the Star Spangled Banner has been uploaded to Youtube! Let me know when you see it.

Ahh...the days of Woodstock. If that was 1970 I was 12. I remember being at camp that summer, really just down the road from the festival. Our counselors would go on their day off and come back and speak in a religious way about the "be in ". I fully expected that in a few years I would be attended other festivals myself. I thought Woodstock was just the beginning. The fact that it was the beginning of the end is something that I think has scared many people of the "late baby boom". By the time we were old enought to "be there", "there" was gone!

But I still carry those memories, hopes and dreams, in my soul, and maybe "that" is what people feel when I play the Star Spangled Banner and Purple Haze.

Wow, 2 different renditions of our national anthem, videotaped from two different venues, captured on one, amature internet video site!
It seems that the playing or singing our anthem really calls for sounds like you haven't played it the same way twice and that's really cool.
Now I dont know if the late Francis Scott Key, or Hendrix for that matter, is recieving royalties for this tune, but if they are, I think you should get in on some of that!

Whether played live in a radio station studio, or through the squeaky, internet audio of youtube, your rendtion of our national anthem never fails to give me chills!
I'll play this video in the summer time on our most humid day to cool off!

BTW, "Shillelagh Tube" would make for a good band name. I'll give you credit if I ever decide to get a Celtic-fusion group together....gotta find some people my own age here in Vermont who want to jam.

I clicked on the link you gave for the Star-Spangled banner performance, but I didn't see it. Youtube gave me this instead.

We've talked about Jethro Tull on the guestbook recently so i thought you'd enjoy this, Aaron

Shillelagh Tube

Thanks Edward. You know, Scott, the keyboardist on "Celtar" (the new CD) was just in Vermont. In fact, he played at Nectars with another band. But the soundman said, "Hey, aren't you the guy who played with Von Cello?" Scott thought it was pretty cool that, with all the bands he sees, he remembered us right away.

As to your comments, I see your point. I think of that video as an introduction, but maybe it is too mysterious. I'll post a few more clips. I have three clips that include the Star Spangled Banner and a few others. I'll let you know when I get them up. One thing about Von Cello, we keep pushing ahead, so eventually something should get us the attention we deserve. It's like wet toilet paper...if you keep throwing gobs of it at the wall, eventually something sticks!

You tube? Had I known....

Well, I'll mke a comment here....really should post this on youtube, but I don't want to sign up for an a MYSpace account it's all too much pressure. comemment is that the video isn't long enough, and it really doesn't begin to scratch the surface of what Von Cello is about...though you do a good job "playin' the blues" in the opening solo of "Get Up Get Out Of My Way". Move Over B.B.King!
I hope that Youtube nets you a much wider fanbase, Aaron, and though that, that you are able to instill a sense of creativity and orginality in the music business.

In other news, I really need to have you back on my show....let me know when "Celtar" is finished so I can do all I can to promote it.

The one and only...

We could try that but I don't know if it reads cookies. If so, then if I went to sign in it would know I wasn't you. I sent an email to their support but haven't heard back yet. I did go and look at some of the cello videos they have and there is nothing like Von Cello!

You Schmoob

I hate when internet sites don't work right. I signed up for youtube. Then it kept asking me to reconfirm my email address, which I did. Then it wanted me to fill out the whole appllication again, which I did. Then it told me I was already a member. So I went to upload and it sent me back to the sign up screen. UGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!

So for now, no Youtube.

A love by any other name...

I have nothing against someone being into Sting singing Dowland. I actually heard a bit of it and was impressed. But I bet you could find otner recordings with great operatic singers whose names you would not know, but who would also sound great. But in our coporate drivin times, it often takes a famous name to make a less famous person's music popular. That is why I'm hoping that someone like Yo-Yo Ma will one day perform and record my music, or my arrangements in *Dead Cello*.

I guess love is always in the air on Valentine's Day. That poem was about the sadness of being without love. I wrote a song about that too when I was in my twenties. Not to compare with John Dowland, but just for fun, here are the lyrics.

Love, like a Rose (by Aaron Minsky)

Love, like a rose. So beautiful when it blooms. So tender to the touch. But also there are thorns.

Love, like a rose. So beautiful in the spring. Still blooming in the fall. In winter, it is gone.

If you are strong, love wil remain.
If you want pleasure, you must take some pain.
If the prince let thorns get in his way, Sleeping Beauty would still be sleeping today.

Now you see, it could never be, that simple dream that you had so long.
Whether I was good or bad to you, don't you know that it was all out of love?

Love, like a rose. So beautiful in the dawn. A fragrance that draws sighs. But also, it draws blood.

Love. Love. Love.
