Springsteen's back yard

It was fun to play a gig on a stage used by Springsteen, South Side Johnny, the Pretenders, and others. Hey TJ, I think you would have been proud of me, playing songs by the Talking Heads and other New Wave groups. It was more fun than I thought it would be. I finally understood the spirit of the punk movement. A little late ... yeah, very late, but better late than never.

The amazing thing about music is that if you let your guard down you can appreciate almost any type of music and understand the inner feelings of the times it expresses.

We also did some new songs by groups like the Killers and Kings of Leon. Another genre I didn't really know.

Hey, you can't keep up with everything!

Psycho Killer - Tonight

Tonight I'll be appearing with Chew the Cud at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ at 10pm. That's the club made famous by Bruce Springsteen. The band plays a mix of new wave & modern pop covers & some originals. It will be a great fun show!

Brahms, again, II

Great performance of Brahms opus 34 (sadly, only last mvt's 3 and 4):

Pinchas Zukerman (on violin), Ida Kavafian who was once in the Beaux Arts Trio, violist Paul Neubauer (shame - didnot yet know his name), Gary Hoffman whom I just saw teach in a masterclass, and David Golub, who had a trio with Colin Carr and Mark Kaplan ...

Ten International Cello Encores

I just got notified in a mail by my sheetmusic (web)shop (which physically is in Amsterdam, Netherlands) that they are out:

Nice cover!

When is the last time anyone posted something heartwarming here? But I just received a letter, yes a letter not an email, from the woman who conducted the orchestra at Ithaca College the year I was there. I guess she saw an ad for my new Ten International Cello Encores because she said that whenever she sees a new book of mine come out she is filled with pride.

I thought that was so nice. I didn't even realize anyone noticed me back then. I was in my 3rd year of cello study and didn't think I stood out from the pack. But she said she has "bright memories" of me. So maybe she saw something in me even in the budding stage.

Her card put a big smile on my face and I sent her back a card as well.

You see, you never know who's watching!

Psycho Killer Qu'est-ce que c'est ?

I'm rehearsing with a band called Chew the Cud. We'll be playing at the Stone Pony (of Bruce Springsteen fame) at the Jersey Shore on Sept. 3rd. They do a lot of covers by the Talking Heads, Radiohead, the Killers, etc. It's a fun genre of music that I've heard in the background but never really learned. So it's actually been a lot of fun!

Fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa!

John Canarsie

On public television today they have a John Denver special. I watched a few minutes and it struck me that these singer/songwriters with guitars were really of the tradition of the troubadours of medieval Europe. But now that tradition has been lost again, replaced largely by corporate pop and music of an African tradition that one rarely sees on public TV. Meanwhile the classical tradition tries to hang on.

One for the Dead Heads

You can also hear the interview and sound clips of the symphony.

Meanwhile I'm in discussions with another publisher for Dead Cello...

Sir William Minsky?

This is cool - on a page for the William Walton cello concerto, Oxford also recommended my Ten International Cello Encores:

I wonder if he is turning in his grave?

This just in...

I got this in an email today on youtube:

Well, i was bored and decided to look up some "odd" musical stuff on Google. After a while of seeing some really neat things, i came across you, and just wanted to say you are a really amazing cello player ,and that i congratulate you because you really have changed the way that i look at playing the cello. I mean, you really can rock out playing normally but i never though of actually trying to play it in 'Celtar' position, lol. Anywho, i also wanted to ask if you still had the score for "Iron Man" , and if i so, then could have a copy.

Minsky Presents!

Anyone into theater music? In my life I always look for new things to get into and my big thing this summer is theater music. Someone gave me her old record collection and there were a bunch or Rodgers and Hammerstein shows as well as Bernstein, Soundheim, and others. I've also been listening to the Broadway channel on satellite radio and internet radio. Actually I'm finding it refreshing and interesting. And here's the NEWS FLASH - I'm writing a show!

Blue Dee Moos

Hey, glad to see you are still out there! I thought you liked them. Maybe it was Lizbeth Levy who liked them. Remember when she appeared on this guestbook and didn't know how she got here? That was weird. Then she disappeared again.

I always liked them with their classical influence and trippy album covers. But there are very few Moody Blues freaks. Although I did have a student once who's mother was totally into them... going to the concerts, etc. She even had videos of concert footage. Kind of like a Dead Head for the Moody Blues.

A Mood Head?

Moo Dee Blooz?

Hey, howzitgoing? I wasn't a big fan of the Moody Blues, but I had a few albums, and enjoyed some of their moody classical-rock style adventures. The lyrics were definitely up for interpretation.

Virtual Un-Reality

Facebook is weird. Someone from my 6th grade class emailed me to check out a picture she posted of the class and next thing you know I'm posting/talking with about a half a dozen kids from the class!

Is facebook a great way to reconnect with people from your past who you would never have heard from again? Or is it another way to waste time typing in your room?

Another view

One of the things about great music is that you can interpret it many ways and it still sounds great. Here is another version of the Brahms piano quartet with an American group (the previous was a Russian group). The Americans do a dream-like version that at times seems to just float on air.

Now THAT'S music!

When I was still in high school I went to the Juilliard library and was listening to some records with headphones. This much older man beckoned me over and put his headphones on me. I don't remember what it was but I think it might have been this:

After it was over I opened my eyes. He smiled at me with wisdom in his eyes and he said, "Now THAT'S music!"

Atheists are Closet Christians

My latest video is perhaps one of my more controversial. It's also the first annotated video. Did I go overboard with the annotations? Perhaps. But I felt like I was walking through a mine field and needed to make many clarifications. It's hard to make strong points and not offend anyone. But I made a valiant attempt.
