Late Beginnings

Kylerake thanks for posting. Have you checked out my various etude and ensemble books? You can find out about them on the Compositions link to the left. For beginners I have Young American Ensembles. These two part pieces are arranged so they can be played as duets with any string instrument including guitar, and with a full ensemble. They are on a beginning level yet incorporate popular styles such as blues, rock, country, and Americana. I think they'd be perfect for older people who start the cello late like yourself. I'm impressed that you were able to do this on your own while supporting a family. Congrats!

Israeli Soldiers Refusing to Evict Fellow Jews

NEGOHOT, Israel, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Members of the Israel army refused to take part in evacuating Israelis from West Bank settlements and two soldiers were disciplined, officials said.

The incident occurred in the West Bank settlement of Negohot almost a month after soldiers from the Shimshon Battalion waved banners with a similar message during their graduation ceremony in Jerusalem, Haaretz reported Monday. Two soldiers were removed from their brigade and sentenced to 20 days in military prison after the incident.

Yariv Oppenheimer, the leader of the anti-settlement Peace Now movement, said some settler leaders were prompting a rebellion within the Israeli military and endangering Israeli society.

"Right-wing leaders and all government parties must speak out against this phenomenon before the army loses control of its soldiers," Oppenheimer said.

One Israeli in a nearby settlement accused the Israeli government of enforcing building laws in a selective and racist manner, the Jerusalem Post reported.

"People are forced to build on their own because one cannot get a building permit nowadays due to political reasons. Only a mile from here you can a see an illegal Arab structure that I, as an IDF officer, together with a Civil Administration official, personally served its owners with a demolition order 10 years ago. But it is still there 10 years later while houses of Jews are demolished," Assaf Freed said.

The rightist group, Homesh First praised the punished soldiers.

Rocking the Guggenheim!

Some people rock the Garden or the PNC Center but last night I played in a rock orchestra for an event at the Guggenheim Museum.

It was very cool to play music at a museum that I've been to many times to see art exhibits. In fact, right now they are having a Kandinsky retrospective. I got to see about half of the paintings. They also had a section where I saw some Monet's, Picasso's, Cezanne's, Van Gogh's, as well as a few paintings of Gauguin, Latreche, Renoir, and others.

Kandinsky was very influenced by music in his art. I don't know if he ever took hallucinogens, but he spoke way back in the early 20th century about color corresponding to music in a way that people used to talk when they were high. Then again, a great artist can often see and hear things that most other's cannot without the need of drugs. Check this out:

"Hearing tones and chords as he painted, Kandinsky theorized that, for examples, yellow is the color of middle-C on a piano, a brassy trumpet blast; black is the color of closure and the ends of things; and that combinations and associations of colors produce vibrational frequencies akin to chords played on a piano. Kandinsky also developed an intricate theory of geometric figures and their relationships, claiming, for example, that the circle is the most peaceful shape and represents the human soul. These theories are set forth in Point and Line to Plane."

Not responding

I did not respond to not steven, but I will not not respond. I think when someone from within a group says ignorant mean things about the group it hurts worse than when someone else does it. I think Jews have had more of this kind of thing than most groups. The free thinking that is encouraged in Judaism is overall a good thing. It is due to this that Jews come up with so many innovations. But the downside is that Jews are not as united as some other groups.

I have a chapter in my book about this called, "Jewish Self-Hatred and It's Cure". In that chapter I argue that a lot of the self hatred we find among Jews stems from a lack of knowledge. We know a lot of people hate the Jews, and if you don't know much about the history of this and the underlying reasons, you may start to hate your own group too, or even hate yourself. But there is much to be proud of, and if you look at who hates the Jews, their hatred can be a source of pride because most Jew haters are evil people, so if they loved the Jews that would be a bigger problem.

Examining Dry Bones

I wonder how many people would understand what this post to the Dry Bones article means:

"Esav sonneh et yaacov... both when he comes with the sword, or without . Yaacov prayed: "save me from my brother, from Esav". Why say both? (He had only 1 brother....)
He was asking G-d, save me when he acts like a brother; save me when he acts like (the sword -bearing) Esav...."

This quote seems to be from the Talmud. Esav is Hebrew for Esau the brother of Jacob, Yaacov in Hebrew. Esau wanted to kill Jacob after Jacob managed to get the blessing from their father for the land of Israel. Jacob prayed to God that he be protected. You would have thought that he'd pray asking to be saved from Esau using his name Esau or by referring to him as his brother. The rabbis noticed that instead Jacob used both terms, Esau, my brother. That is strange so the rabbis see in this that there is a deeper meaning.

When he said "Esau", he was saying protect me from the man Esau who hates me and wants to kill me. When he said, "my brother" he was saying protect me even when he doesn't hate me and doesn't want to kill me. In other words, Jacob knows that no matter how Esau feels about him or how he acts, deep down Esau does not accept him and will never be someone who he can totally trust. Therefore he asks God to protect him from Esau no matter how he acts or feels.

The Talmudic rabbis said that the Romans were the spiritual descendants of Esau. And the Romans became Christians. So a modern view of this ancient story would be that it is teaching Jews to be weary of Christians or any Gentile no matter how they treat you. If they want to kill you (like many Muslims do today) of course you must be weary of them. But if they are like brothers to you and speak kindly and even support you, still be weary, because deep down they don't totally accept you and want to convert you.

Now, is this true of all Christians? I would say no. But still, Jews must always be aware that there are many people out there who seek to convert them. Some do it by the sword, and others do it with a smile.

I hope that's not offensive, but the bottom line to me is that Jews have a right to be Jews and not have to endlessly fight off conversion attempts no matter what the motivation or who they come from.

not steven is not here so steven is here?

the other day a guy said.. the worst antisemites are the jews themselves. what do you think of this? i mean jews can always knock down anti jew anitisrael talk by saying its antisemitic if it comes from a goy. jews nned not consider it. but if a jew says st not superpro israel or pro jew ,you cant just call him antisemitic cause hes a semite. with this line one can define all anti jew remarks as not factual but as antisemitic. its the catch 22 of all catches.

Still Reading

Still reading through this. So far I like this one:

"At 10:08 AM, Hannityinaskirt said...
I'm sorry about your experience but I do not think most Christians are like that, even evangelical John Hagee said Jews are not going to convert to Christianity and mentioned that Jews sang "Hatikvah" not "Amazing grace" on the way to the gas chambers. But sadly there will always be extremists trying to make sure their religion dominates the world. However, at least the Christians are a bit less violent about it."

I am glad to admit that there are Christians today who accept the Jews for who they are and do not seek their conversion, nor believe they are destined for hell. I am sad that the New Testament has statements to the opposite affect but apparently there is enough room for both interpretations. I hope more and more Christians take the first position.

Those Christian Zionists want to convert us for their own good!

Dry Bones is my favourite cartoon blog: http://drybonesblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/friends-1994.html, some interesting discussion arises.

The cartoonist, Yaakov Kirschen, was in the US and once again happy finding active Christian Zionists really taking a stand for Israel, but ... later he met some who wanted to convert him, and that spoilt his enthusiasm.

Reactions started like this:

one Anonymous says:
Yaakov- you didn't realize all this time the only reason these Goyim are 'pro-Israel, 'pro-Jews', is because they hope to convert us so that will clear the way for "the Rapture" to happen. You know, that all Good Christians will rise up into the air and ascend to heaven. Apparently they get Extra Points if they convert a Jew.

Another Anonymous says:
Yaakov, I would rather have some missionary brochures stuffed into my hand than a knife into my heart. Given a choice between Evangelicals and the "moderate" Muslims represented by groups like CAIR, I think the choice is a "no brainer."

And on and on.

I'm with the second Anon!

Inside WBAI

It was fun to be in WBAI getting interviewed. One funny moment happened off the air. There was a middle aged woman at the station talking about the Halloween outfits she saw people wearing on her way to the station She was wondering where the emphasis on sexiness came in. She said, "Didn't it used to be about being scary". She said, ""The costumes this year are like, what would happen if a police woman was a slut, what would happen if a witch was a slut, what would happen if a nurse was a slut, what would happen if ..."

Hours at WBAI

I don't know if any of you heard the show but I ended up on air at WBAI until midnight. Of course they did a lot of fundraising but they kept coming back to me and I was able to play the entire Dead Cello on the radio! Dave Nolan also played the entire 14 minutes plus version of Bird Song that we have on Celtar. I wish he could have played even more Von Cello stuff but I was glad to be on for such a long time.

Now it is late at night and I have to get up early to play for the Marathon. Thank God we gain an hour tonight due to the change from Daylight Savings Time!
