Happy New Decade!

Hey everyone, Happy New Decade! 2010

I started the year in Boston playing at the Westin Boston Harbor Hotel. I spent my first year of college in Boston so it was a good feeling to be back there after all these years as a professional cellist.

The zeros (as they called the 2000's) turned out in many ways to be a big zero. Let's hope the next decade is better.

The Messiah and the money ...

Did anyone catch the report on the PBS Newshour about Handel? I knew he was rich but apparently in today's dollars he would have had something like $100 million! Aside from his music he was a savvy investor. In fact, he wrote the Messiah as an oratorio because there was more profit in that than opera!

Being an ex-deacon I have to say this. It was the most fun I've ever had, like being a dungeon master for over a million people. Go figure why It turned out I love D&D.

Alright calm your nips.

Well its very simple. In DnD as a dungeon master your job is to make up a scenario to draw your fellow players in. To give them challenges, a nice story line, but not to make it to difficult and remember everyone is there to have a good time.

Basically thats the same trash I had to do as a Deacon. Run around make shit up, "oh and so jesus did walk through the valley of shadow where he..." *rolls +3 holy* "vanquished the demon legion". Fun bullshit.
voncello (2 days ago) Reply | Remove
You see, not being a Catholic or a Christian, I didn't know what you were talking about. I thought you meant that watching my video was "like being a dungeon master for over a million people", and then when Crucifixious said that was "one of the funniest things" he's heard I thought he thought your description of my video was funny, but I still didn't understand why it was funny ... and ...

Never mind!

Dude it doesn't matter if your christian or hindu or pastafarian. It's all garbage. Stories made up to explain the world when man was too young to know how it really worked. Where Thor was needed to rage war in the skies to explain lightning and Gaia was needed to explain the origin of the earth we walk on. Even if you complexity it to make it 1 or hundreds of gods, its all still bullshit made up in ignorance.

Carlin might have been making shots at Christianity in general but they're all trash
voncello (2 days ago) Reply | Remove
Spoken like an ex-Christian!

I discuss my ideas about this in more detail in my video, "Atheists are Closet Christians". But basically what I point out is that when Christians reject their religion they keep the same kind of Christian attitude that they know "the truth". They used to think they knew the truth when they were Christians. Now that they reject that they know the truth that every other religion is BS. It's the same mentality in different clothes, with a hint of sour grapes.

Very cute but frankly i'm going to save my time.

The difference between an atheist and any theist is proof. Were not making a claim, were stating what we have factual evidence of and that is that there is none of god. ANY theist want to step forward and give us evidence then we lose our argument in a heartbeat but in all the time of man that has never happened.

It doesn't matter if someone was born into a religion and fell out or if they simply weren't taught any, there is one argument.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
I used to think like you. I "believed" there was no evidence of God. Then I met Orthodox Jews for the first time in life and they challenged me to look into the information they claimed was hidden in the Torah, Talmud, and other Jewish writings. I was skeptical but put in many years of study. I eventually put my findings in my book Beyond Faith. I think they make a compelling case but I find that many "evidence seeking" secularists are unwilling to even look! They accept their beliefs on faith.
Berserker07 (1 day ago) 0 Reply | Spam

I have no problem looking, but i'm not going to bend the rules. You want me to believe there's a god prove it and not with something that "touches me". Matt Dillahunty has a spoon and he has dared every faith to pray for their god to turn it into a fork. If that happened I would consider it proof, if a giant monolith rained from the sky I would consider it proof. If Emma Watson knocked on my door and sucked me off I would consider it proof. Prove it, dont give me your "I was like you", prove it.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
You said, "You want me to believe there's a god prove it". Did I say I want you be believe anything? This idea of wanting people to "believe" is a Christian mentality. Also the tests you want, a giant monolith, a spoon turning into a fork ... it reminds me of the silly proofs in the New Testament of Jesus walking on water and turning water into wine. These are childish ideas. If you want "proof' then, as you would in science or any other field, spend the time it takes to study and learn.
Berserker07 (1 day ago) 0 Reply | Spam

No no, that's ok. I'm going to save myself the time. Every faith on the planet has some form of foolish "science" team that is constantly releasing bullshit that real scientist destroy in peer review.

No your right, you haven't said it directly. But you haven't really said anything other than "Judaism is right and Christians are egotistical".

So if "Judaism" is right, prove it. Prove it scientifically, give me physical evidence. That can be analyzed. Otherwise stop wasting my time.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
You are the one who came to my page so if anyone is wasting anyone's time it is you wasting mine. If you want the hear from scientists, read the books or Gerald Schroeder. He's a nuclear physicist with 2 doctorates, and an MIT professor. Are those enough scientific credentials? He is Orthodox and shows in his books how the Torah contains amazing scientific insights that science has only come to today. If you don't read it you'll remain in your proud state of ignorance and scoffing.
Berserker07 (1 day ago) 0 Reply | Spam

yea... and how many christian and muslim scientist are standing with greater credentials. The head of the human genome project is a catholic and has stood stalwart in the face of peer review. And besides beyond all that the point remains the same, I don't want his word I want it shown to ME. He cant twist the world all he wants to his logic but if he twists something its not the same anymore is it?

I came to your channel because it said "George Carlin", get over yourself.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
You are like a child saying. "My scientist is better than your scientist". The point is, IF, and this is a big IF, you want to educate yourself to NEW ideas that you are unfamiliar with, I have pointed to a few ways to go. On the other hand, IF you want to remain with what you already know and refuse to look into new ideas, then feel free to remain where you are. But please cut the nastiness or I will ban you from the page, NOT for your ideas, or lack thereof, but for you nasty tone. Good night.

But your short sightedness in saying this is a "ex-christian" view proves the limitations of your own though process and hypocrisy. Do you really think Jews dont think themselves in the right? If they didn't then why worship at all?

You bare the same tendencies of your Jewish past that you claim of us. The difference is all we want is one argument quelled. After that we have no arguments and once it is answered there can no longer be a real atheist.

Prove god and you win.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
It's not a question about whether or not one thinks he's right. It's a question of how much evidence you have and of what quality. I single out Christians because in our society they are the largest and most dominant group. When they are believers they think only they know the truth, yet when they leave the faith they don't leave behind the egotistical notion that they know the truth. They just replace their old truth with the new Atheist truth, but they refuse to even look at what Judaism says.

And what does it say? Does Yahweh appear in the church every Saturday? Does Yahweh instantaneously spawn food for the less fortunate? Does he burn a star of David in the sky?

I reiterate, your just as blind as you claim ex-christians that you know the truth and they dont. You've given me no proof just, "they wont give it a chance". Yes we do, we ALL do, and i've given it prior. PROVE IT.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
Where did you get Yahweh? Jews never use this word yet Christians seem to think they do. Again, you are looking for silly signs. If God did burn a star of David in the sky you'd only look for something else. I'm not asking you to expect miracles, just sit down with some books and maybe take a few classes. I recommend my book. It took me 20 years to write! I put a lot of information in its 554 pages. But if you don't want to that's fine, but then don't tell me: prove it! The proof is in my book!
Berserker07 (1 day ago) 0 Reply | Spam

Yea and once again I'm going to save time and my money NOT buying your book. If you claim there is a mystical being then your going to need proof that equal it. Hence a miracle.

I really don't give a shit what you call it. Your book is no more proof of god than the bible or Torah. Its a bunch of paper written by man. extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Your book isn't proof its a scam.

So thanks for reiterating my main point. It's all just being a dungeon master for the world
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
You just proved my point too. You have maintained your Christian mentality though you've rejected Christianity. You don't want to read anything! God forbid you might learn something that could upset your need to have faith in whatever it is you believe. When you were a Christian you were brainwashed to NOT look into Judaism. Now you still refuse to look into Judaism. You prefer to believe on faith in your new answer.

BECAUSE ITS STILL NOT PROOF. A MANS WORD CANNOT BE TRUSTED WHEN CLAIMING THERE IS A INFINITE BEING MONITORING THE UNIVERSE. Someone who will take someones word for such a grand claim is a fool. I dont care what your book says or the muslims say or the Christians say or ANYONE says. If there is a "God" then he has to prove himself to ME or its not sufficient. HELL I've even stretched that and said he can use a trusted famed atheist. Your wasting my time sir, nut up or shut up.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
You are right, I am wasting my time. I am going to ban you from this page. You have shown that that you are not interested in learning anything new. You haven't advanced past your deacon days. You still want to live in a cocoon of faith that your ideas are only right ones, and you still refuse, quite adamantly to expand your sources of information. So you are banned. I hope one day you will free your mind from your self imposed dungeons. But then again, as you've indicated, you like dungeons.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
You also said, " Your just as blind as you claim ex-christians that you know the truth and they dont." Again, did I say I know the truth? This is what I mean. Forget about "the truth". Just educate yourself to new ideas. Why must so many ex-Christians continue to feel this need to have "the truth"? Maybe there is no such thing. Did you ever think of that? Isn't it wiser and more rational to just continually investigate new ideas and sources of information rather than put "truth" blinders on?
Berserker07 (1 day ago) 0 Reply | Spam
| Remove | Unblock User
If its not the truth then why believe it? Do you not actually believe what you claim? An idea is worthless if its boundless.

This is all proving to be a waste of my time. You have no proof, you have an "idea". Well congrats, we all have ideas. Its a bonus of being sentient.

Your logic is lazy, egotistical, blind, and frankly just poor in general. You don't have proof. You claim you dont have the "truth", BUT I should believe what your saying, and if I dont then IM being blind.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
What did I claim? I merely suggested you be open to looking into the ideas of a group of people that have been rather influential in the world these past 3500 yrs. You are all caught up in belief, truth, proof. You also have a nasty angry tone that I'm tiring of. I think we've gone about as far as we can. You don't want to learn anything new. You don't want to read or study. You just want to snap out nasty comments. I find your attitude to be contrary to increasing understanding and peace.

I would LOVE to learn something new, unfortunately you like other thiest are spouting out the same shit and claiming its diffrent because your to blind to look at the guy next to you and say "hey, he's using the same arguments, maybe I should change mine". Your a tool, you have plent of excuses "this guy believes it", "these people were influential", but none of thats proof. They're excuses, they dont prove a god, they're side facts that dont influence the topic at hand.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
You are full of faith based beliefs, aren't you? Where did I say I was a theist? Your parameters of thinking are so bound up in Christianity. I try to point this out, not only to you, but to the many people in the majority culture. If you were open to new sources of information you might be able to move into whole new ways of thinking. But instead you want to stay in the same place and hold onto the anger you have with the Church, but you want to take it out on all religions.
Berserker07 (1 day ago) 0 Reply | Spam

If your getting the feeling that i'm angry then your right. Because i'm tired of you wasting my time. All you do is say something then retreat, say something and then retreat. "well I didn't claim something, I just suggested". Your just another theist tool. Live in your egotism all you want, pretend that everyone christian, atheist, muslim are all just being blind. Despite the fact that we have 1 argument resting on our faction that you just cant answer. Thanks for wasting my time.
voncello (1 day ago) Reply | Remove
I never said I was a theist. I am neither a theist or an atheist. I am a thinking person who remains open to many possibilities. If you are angry then see a shrink. It's really not helpful to spout your anger at strangers. You are trying to set me up as some type of father figure or something. I become the surrogate for all you hated in your church. You don't know me from Adam! So chill out dude. All I'm saying is be open to new ideas ... or don't. Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

Err... Didn't you just ban him?

Doesn't really say much that you'll continue the argument with yourself, does it?
voncello (21 hours ago) Reply | Remove
I banned him but he had made other posts before that so I responded to those. If you look through my videos I've had really long conversations with people. I almost never ban anyone, but when I do it's not because of their ideas but only if they are insulting and angry. I enjoy hearing all kinds of different ideas but I don't see the point in letting people vent their anger on me. Actually I found it quite funny that he was demanding proof that God exists in 500 letter posts on You Tube!

Imagine some other subject like ... the existence of quarks, you know, those sub atomic particles. Imagine someone demanding that you prove the existence of quarks in 500 letters! How about proving evolution, relativity, thermodynamics, whatever, in 500 letters! How absurd to insist on that. Yet this guy says about God, "Prove it!" right now, right here, in 6 sentences! Asking for a miracle is foolish because miracles don't prove anything. Proof is about amassing evidence and that takes time!

Salamone di Rossi; playing outside

Interesting to read all this about di Rossi and Italy's Jewish composers in those early times. I went to the local music lib, they have 5 of his works - I borrowed one to show a flute teacher friend of mine - pieces for 5 flutes.

On a different note:
with a strings ensemble I play in one of our first concerts was one we did in a shopping "mall" (not the American size, besides, this one dates back to 1885) - shoppers enjoyed it and stopped to listen.
Someone filmed part of it:

8SPE1 is good!

Back in Junior HIgh School "8SPE1 is good" was our class slogan. Probably subliminally influenced by that I made a video called "Zionism is Good". I just did a Google search on "Zionism is Good" and saw that my video is one of the top results on the first page! The others are actually anti-Zionist. So I feel I have done some good in this regard.

Western Music

Western music, the music that includes classical music, developed for the most part in the Church. Jews were pretty much excluded from this. Also they were always moving around due to discrimination so Jews were not able to develop their own classical music or participate much in developments going on in Christendom. However, the original Church music came from Jews who converted to Christianity. Therefore the early melodies and ideas about harmony, etc. are probably from Jewish sources.

There are no famous Jewish composers from the Classical period, but starting in the Romantic period we have Mendelssohn. His parents were born Jewish so officially he is considered a Jew though he was raised as a Catholic. Later in the Romantic period there were a few Jewish composers of moderate note like Offenbach and Meyerbeer. At the end of the Romantic period a giant of a composer, Mahler, was Jewish but he converted because Jews were not allowed to conduct at the state opera. When he converted he said he "changed his coat' meaning that the inside had stayed the same.

Of course in modern times there have been several famous Jewish composers like Copeland, Bernstein, Gershwin, and Minsky.

Ha! ... managed to slip that in!

Rossi - the original Von Cello ... sort of ...

Salamone de' Rossi became the leading Jewish composer of the late Italian Renaissance, and a court musician of the Gonzaga rulers of Mantua. Very little is known about his life. He was apparently the son of a certain Bonaiuto (Azariah) de' Rossi; but this Azariah cannot be identical with the well-known philosopher of the same name who expressed regret that he had no sons to survive him.

Rossi's published works ranging between the years 1589-1628 are the only direct documentation on his life and work. It has been assumed that he was born about 1570. He entered the service of Duke Vicenzo I in 1587 as a singer and viola player, and soon became the leader of the duke's musical establishment and of an instrumental ensemble composed most probably of Jewish musicians. In 1606, Duke Vincenzo I freed Rossi of the requirement to wear the yellow badge imposed on the Jewish community of the city, and this privilege was renewed in 1612 by the new duke, Francesco II. Rossi's group achieved a high reputation and was occasionally loaned to neighboring courts, as in 1612 when Alessandro, duke of Mirandola, invited "the Jew Salamon and his company" to his court. Rossi's name as a violist appears on the ducal payrolls until the year 1622. The death of the last Gonzaga duke and the sack of Mantua by the Austrian army (1628-30) put an end to the golden age of Mantuan court music. In that year many Jews fled to the Venetian ghetto where the Mantuan music circle found a certain measure of continuation in the Jewish musical Accademia degli Impediti. This group was sponsored by Rossi's patron, the famed Leone Modena, although it cannot be ascertained whether Rossi himself was still alive and active in the Accademia.

With Salamone de' Rossi, a peak was reached in Jewish contributions to Western art music. He was perhaps the last, but certainly the most important, of a long and distinguished list of Jewish court musicians (instrumentalists, singers, dancers, players) who were active in Mantua throughout the 16th century.

At the Mantuan court Rossi developed his abilities through a constant exchange of views and techniques in composition with the well-known musicians of the court.

Like the other Mantuan court musicians, Rossi started as a madrigalist but soon tried his creative talents at the new style of ornamental monody, i.e., songs or instrumental pieces with one leading solo voice supported by a fundamental bass. He is considered the pioneer of these new baroque forms which include the trio sonata and suite. As a Jewish musician, his lasting contribution is his Ha-Shirim Asher li-Shelomo, 33 settings for three to eight voices of Hebrew texts, comprising psalms, hymns, and other religious poems for festive synagogue services. The settings are composed in the then prevailing a cappella style of Palestrina and G. Gabrieli, with intent to regenerate traditional musical liturgy with polyphonic choral settings.

Woosh - long discussion, and quite rare in the YT-sphere the way it unfolds. Have read a lot, but not all yet.

Came across this in WSJ:
an article about a concertseries of Jewish music Charles Krauthammer (from the Wash. Post) started.

Note: it's always odd how, when you come across a name that is totally new to you, it pops up again one or two days later. I just googled the bio of a singer I am to accompany in a few weeks, and one of the projects she did while studying here in the Netherlands was ... a program dedicated to Salamone de Rossi ...

Where's Kyle?

Unfortunately I don't have the code on this page that something like Youtube has that let's you know when someone comments on your comment. I'll have to see if I can do that. That would facilitate discussions. For all we know Kyle forgot he even made that post and may never come back again!

By the way, I never had false fifths. I almost never change my strings or my bow hair. They seem to work fine year after year. I wonder if a lot of this isn't cello-hype. Either that or I'm careful or lucky.

Hello Kyle, great to meet a new poster here!

Other subjects: Kyle, I would immediately say what Von Cello already said - about how much fun it is to play duets/trio's etc. with other cellists. This can start really early on. It's a great encouragement for study, too!

One thing I sure missed when I was a kid (I started at age 9) is to know more about how a cello is made (but you got that in yr list already). I remember I only later discovered there's a thing called bass bar in a cello!
Also: how you keep it in good shape. How to properly clean bow and strings (always wipe the rosin off with a cloth after playing so it doesn't build up) and the cello itself. How to notice when strings go bad (false fifths, sound, not seeing much of the windings anymore).
Then also, as a teenager, I was curious precisely how the sound on a bowed string instrument is produced (the famous "slip-stick" action) and about acoustic matters (like, 50% of the sound of a cello goes out the back). My 2 cents.
