Very cool interview with Frank Zappa. I think Carson handled it just right. He actually had a very serious conversation with Zappa and I think Zappa was surprised at Johnny's ability to communicate with him. The issue is interesting too. Where do you draw the line, if ever, on what can be allowed to be said on recordings?

We had a Passover seder last night at my house. One thing I notice is that, at least my family, enjoys remembering the Jewish past rather than talking about the predicted Jewish future. I think that is common. People feel more comfortable remembering how the Jews left Egypt, and how the rabbis discussed the Exodus. But they feel less comfortable discussing the belief that the Temple will be rebuilt, Israel will become a kingdom, and all nations will come together to worship the one God.

It's a good idea. Maybe I should just post the link above the guestbook with a sentence about that.

But what would Von Cello fans chat about?

Steve, that's a cool internet invention. I don't think we get enough traffic yet to use is, but it's good to know the option is there.

Boy, there has been a lot going on behind the scenes at Von Cello. I'll mention stuff as the days to by.

Tonight I'll be on the Joey Reynolds show at 2:00 A.M. EST (daylight savings time). It comes out of WOR, (AM radio) in New York, but can be heard in California at 11:00 P.M. Maybe you can hear it somewhere on the web...even in Spain. So try to check it out.

When My Ship Comes In...

I wish. No, at this point I'm still in the audience...but I am getting tickets direct from Relix (since I was on the CD) so hopefully I'll be sitting in a section where I can mingle with some "big wigs". In a few weeks I'll be going to see the New Riders and my attorney will be introducing me to Dave Nelson and Buddy Cage. So that will be cool. I figure sooner or later someone is going to want to add some rock cello to the mix.

Von Cello, are you going to the Jammys? It sounds like a great time. The first time I saw Zappa was in 1974 at the Felt Forum, brings back great memories.

Dweisels Ripped My Flesh

BTW, Neal, Dweisel Zappa is going to be performing at the Jammys. It will be on the 17th of April at the Garden Forum, or whatever they call the smaller room. Other guests include McCoy Tyner...can you believe that? And Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, etc. If you happen to be in town, I'll see you there.

Logging...is that like jogging?

Zappa was a 20th century man. Today he seems an enigma, being so many things at once. But I think he was more real than most of the musicians of today, who create an image in order to fit into a certain genre (to make money).

Look at Mozart...he was a symphonic composer, but he was also a soloist, but he was also an opera composer...and through his subjects he was a commedian and satarist too. He even made fun of the royalty through his operas...something that could have gotten him in a lot of trouble in those days. And don't forget, he died very young. One can only imagine what he would have done had he lived to hear Beethoven's 9th.

If all the musicians logged in here at same time would you have a log jam?

By the way, i had trouble logging in here, but it's ok now.

Yes, good points. It's really hard to label Frank Zappa at anything. He was a composer, guitarist, band leader, comedian, social satirist, etc. His wife, Gail, made an interesting point that she likes bands playing his music, but just wants money from it. The Grateful Dead made a brilliant decision by allowing their shows to be taped night after night. Since they played different shows with a large song selection, many people kept going to the shows, and they made most of their money basically that way.

Zappa

Wecome Neal!

I bet the Zappa cuts would be amazing. He was a unique musician. Not really a rocker, sort of a modern classical composer, but not really that either. He cut his own path...and had a big influence on me. Why should people be able to be fit into neat boxes?

I want to read the rest of the articles about him in Relix, but I found his wife's comments to be very interesting. She seems to be thinking along the old model of not wanting Zappa's music played by anyone unless she gets paid. Whereas, the Dead were ahead of their time with the model of letting a lot of music get out there for free, realizing that that makes for a strong fan base, which leads to money anyway. I think either model can work, but it should be up to the artist to decide. I bet Frank would be more into just speading his music around if were he here today.

Could you imagine if he were? The whole landscape of music would be different if Zappa were still here, or Garcia, or Coltrane, or Beethoven...

I just got the entire CD Imaginary Diseases by Frank Zappa from zappa.com. It's awesome, all instrumental from the 1972 big band tour.

No Soap Radio

I just found out that the Von Cello version of The Other One was played on WBAR, Barnard Radio! That's from Barnard College, which is across the street from Columbia, and close to Manhattan School of Music. I lived around there for years and passed Barnard many a time. How cool to think that I'm on their radio station now!

Here's the link for the play list of the show:
