Von Seamus!

Hey Edward...or should I say DJ Seamus! It was such a great experience to be on your radio show. The three hours went by like three minutes. You really understood where I was coming from and gave me a great forum to share ideas about my music and polical and spiritual beliefs. So I thank you for having me, and I will definitely take you up on your offer to come back at some time in the future.

I'm still up here in Burlington. I found that there is a surprisingly vibrant night scene here. I'm looking forward to being part of it tomorrow when Von Cello plays Nectars at 9:00. Last night we put up posters in and out of the club. Now today, I hope to take in a bit of that GREEN Vermont scenery.

As to your mid east comment...I think you are right that if the Jews and Arabs all dropped their arms most of them would live in peace. I was in Israel for a month in the mid 1980's. I also spent some time in Egypt. I found that most people on both sides were normal people who just wanted to live a good life. I even met Israeli Arabs who told me how lucky they were to live in Israel where they have more freedom and opportunity than they would have in most Arab states. But, in all honesty, I did also meet some Arabs who were severely brainwashed into the Jihadist mentality.

I ran into two Palestinian boys one day on a walk through Jerusalem. We started sharing our beliefs and things got a little heated. I said, "Isn't this funny? We all believe in a God of love and yet we are fighting." Then one boy said, "How do you know God is a God of love". I said, "What do you mean?" He said, "God is a God of hate". I said, "How can you say that?" He said, "Because God tells me to kill you."

Now this was back around 1985. Today that boy is probably in his 30's and may be a soldier for Hamas, or maybe he became one of the suicide bombers who blew himself up in a crowded restaurant, or on a bus, or at a disco. I got a glimpse of what we are seeing now, way back then when it was just getting started. When 9/11 happened, and everyone was saying "Why did this happen?", I was saying, "What took you so long?"

We have to be honest and realize that there is a strain of holy war going through the Muslim world. We do not see that in the Christian or Jewish world. So, until somehow this ideology can be defeated or altered, putting down arms is suicidal. I wish we lived in a world of reasonable people who all believed in a God of love, but at least at this point in history, that is just not reality. Maybe that is why the messianic prophecies are set in the future. We hope that one day we will see universal peace, but right now that day seems a long way off.

In the meantime though, we can play music and share ideas, and work together to create a better world! And I think we did a bit of that yesterday on your show.

if you\'ll endulge me.....

Hey guys...it's me again...I thought I'd share this with you....it's a posting I just put up on my livejournal.com page and it's pretty much some thoughts about the topics Von Cello and I were discussing this evening. L8R, eaburke81

08:54 pm - It's Alive! It's Alive!
Ah, the thrill of going live! Now I'm not a professional, touring musician in any sense of the word, but with the kind of stuff I do at WWPV 887.-FM, I get to hang out with professional musicians! That's right folks, it's one of the many perks of being a disc jockey. Now that two weeks have gone by, I have interviewed both a local Celtic ceili band from Middlebury, VT(www.myspace.com/ohanliegh), and a "Fusion Cellist" from NYC who is on NARAS, the commitee who votes on the Grammy nominees each year (www.voncello.com). With the Celtic folk group I was able to play along with them on a set of wooden spoons I bought in Canada, (which was a blast!), and I learned so much from them about how Irish and Celtic music is kept alive in these modern times. With Von Cello this week, I got to hear some live, solo, ELECTRIC, cello on such classic rock standards as The Greatful Dead's "Dark Star", and a Hendrix-inspired rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner", (which gave me the chills, I might add.....almost as if Jimi had channeld himself through the cello), amoung other great , inventive orginal tunes. Man, this is what I live for! Meeting people in person who do so many strange and wonderful things.....kinda like me but I'm not one to brag!
If those of you reading this entry are just starting college, I would encourage you to get involved with your college radio station - sign up for a show and play the music that YOU like to listen to (...as long as it's appropriate....) and see how you do behind the mike. Talk with the local bands in your area and support live music. It's truly incredible how much talent you'll find out there if you look beyond all this American Idol/MTV/TOP 40, "Bling-Bling", media-driven rubbish. Where am I going with this? Don't let it be up to a company to decide who or what you like to listen to, or what clothes you should wear, or what Internet journal/blog site you should sbuscribe to...You don't absolutely HAVE to be on MYSPACE, or LIVEJOURNAL, or FACEBOOK for that matter. Take it from someone who's been there, one of the things you learn in college, or that you should learn in college, is how to think and act for yourself. If everybody in the United States, and ultimately, the world, embraced and acted upon this way of living, then it would be a much better place for all of us...and I would consider cancelling my plans to move to Canada or Ireland if things got any worse around here. God Bless America!
Thanks for reading! L8R, SterlingEAB

P.S. BTW.... WWPV 887.-FM "The Mike" will be going off-air for the rest of the summer until the Fall semester....sorry I haven't been keeping up with the playlists...it's mostly becuase all my playlists are up on-line now...check 'em out at www.wwpv.org/ under "PlayLists" and then click on "Globe Gab" (The name of my old show).
Enjoy! ( If you want to find that special, obscure band or artist, you can, (if you want to, that is), check out www.cdbaby.com ...and they're not paying me to say that)!!!!

You make some good points, Von cello, though idealy if both jews and Arabs were to lay down their arms at once there might still be some fist-fights, but peace would previal eventually....I think it is possible that most people of Arab descent are not prone to hatred and violence...we're so quick to judge everyone these days....but mostly, I'm staying away from the news becuase it's just so depressing... I mean, what can we do in the Middle East? Just sit back and watch both groups blow themselves to bits?

We Be Jammin'

I sat in on a great jam session last night right here in Westchester at the Heights Bistro and Bar. On drums was Von Cello drummer, John DiGuillio. On bass, Alex Craven, of the Bill Haley and the Comets band. Alex and I lived in the same building in NYC for many years. We also had a great harp player (harmonica), some guitars, and singers.

At first everyone was staring at my cello, wondering what I would do. But I just played very subtle, quiet lines and chords, to fit in as any guitarist would. But after a while they gave me solos, and people were blown away. I don't say that with any ego. The owner himself told me, "You made the night". But I think we all made the night. It was a lot of fun, and I expect to be back there next Wednesday.

God is...one?

Good point that the Jews and Muslims have the same God. Who doesn't? But if you really study the Bible you'll find out that the Jews are descended from Abraham's son Isaac, and the Muslims claim descendancy from Abraham's other son, Ishmael. The two did not get along, and fearing for her son's life, Abraham's wife sent Ishmael, and his mother, away. The Talmud states that Ishmael was shooting arrows at Isaac. So, the Bible makes clear that these two brothers did not live together in peace. It also makes clear who was the agressor.

The amazing thing about studying the Torah is not so much about whether or not there is a God, but the insights that the author had about human nature. The author could tell, from looking at the people of that time, 3,500 years ago, what there future generations would be like.

Do we have free choice? Yes, to some extent. But are we also products of our genes and our upbringings? Yes. The bottom line truth of the middle east conflict is that if all the Arabs laid down their arms, there would be peace. If all the Jews laid down their arms, there would be a massacre. All else flows from this basic truth. Sad but true.

Operation Desert Frustration!

Well, I just hope that someday the Israelis and Palestinians can sit down together one day and realize how much they both like water and couscous...it\'s hot in the desert so ya gotta have nourishment! (ok, I know, couscous is typically a morrocan dish, but the Middle East is on the Mediterranean too). Besides, look at some of the other stuff the goups have in common: sand, camels, wine, olives, and God...that\'s right, God. (You know, that whole Abraham/Issac/Ishmael thing from the Bible)? Yes, Ishmael from the Bible, the Hebrew Old Testament....I\'m not talking \'bout Moby Dick here....both groups sprung up from Abraham...he's where it all started.
In all seriousness...I hope that peace will come, and land will be claimed on both sides someday soon.

i think europe is caught in a big one..they let hitler kill off 6000000 nice guys and hoped hed finish it up. He didnt! They sent the survivers off to the dessert to get killed off by arabs. They didnt! So now when the jews fight with the arabs the europeans want to get involved but they know THEY CAUSED ALL THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE. If they had stopped hitler wed be in europe today with no arab israeli conflict. The europeans know they started this all and when theres fighting in the M.E. they say in a hi voice for jews to stop fighting cause in their hearts they still want us to die, to disappear....but we wont

Hey Ed, glad to see you showed up! I'm looking forward to our radio interview next week on WWPV, Vermont. I'm glad you like the Sgt. Cello stuff. I plan to put a few instrumental classic rock covers on the next CD, and I may go more in that direction depending on what gets the most attention. Von Cello is made up of top level pro musicians, so we can go in any number of directions.

Steve, good point. Anti-Semitism is nothing new, but an Israeli army that has the ability to defend itself is truly a miricle! Who, during the dark days of W.W. II would have believed it could happen?

Hello Von Cello - you've got an awesome site here. Is the Sgt. Cello's Lonely Hearts Club Date Band gonna cut an album anytime soon? Heard an acoustic version of "Smoke on the Water" and loved it! Keep up the good work!

Kofi Annan tipped his hand today when he accused Israel of purposely attacking U.N. troops. He had no proof for his accusation and he didn't wait for an investigation. It has been clear that the U.N. is biased against Israel, but that became even more obvious today.

We also heard that the President of Iraq spoke out in support of Hezbollah. I heard his speech before congress in which he kept talking about how important it is to HIS country that they defeat the terrorists. But apparently when it involves Israel, he is in support of the terrorists! It makes me sorry that America is putting resources into Iraq. If he can't support America's strong ally Israel, why should we support him? What a sad commentary it is on the Arab world when even our "friends" express the same bias and hatred as our enemies!

I had a party this past weekend and someone who is running for congress showed up. I told him that when I was in junior high school I was planning on becoming a lawyer and eventually running for office. He asked what made me decide to become a musician. I said that, back then musicians had a lot of influence. Anything John Lennon had to say about politics became front page news. So I thought I could be just as influencial, if not more, as a musician.

Unfortunately, I never became as famous as I had hoped, and never got the influence I thought I would have...but then again....so far neither has he!

A friend just emailed me accusing Israel of having a "hate-fest". Yet it is the exact opposite of the truth.

Listen to the words of the leaders of Hezbollah. Listen to the words of leaders of Hamas, Iran, and other Islamist groups. They openly call for the destruction of Israel and they praise those who kill innocent Jews. Do you hear Jewish leaders calling for the destruction of any Arab country? Do you ever hear them call for, or praise the killing of innocent civilians? No Jew is happy to see war, but almost every Jew understands that Israel must defend itself against those who seek its destruction.

The contrast is obvious. Where the hate is coming from is obvious. It is just sad that there are people who cannot recognize the obvious. And one cannot help but wonder why.

By the way, whether or not Judaism, or any religion, is the truth of the universe, or whether or not God exists, is really a side issue. What I find so amazing about studying Judaism is that it is the recorded thoughts of a very intelligent people going back to the dawn of civilization. The insights that the Jewish sages had over 3000 years ago are very interesting to read, and perhaps most incredible, are still relevent today!

And as in interesting side note, you should realize that this prophecy is actually in the Torah. It is a quote of an angel, speaking for God, to the mother of Ishmael. So, Christians and Muslims, since they also claim that the Bible is the word of God, must accept that this quote is directly from God, not from a Jewish sage.

But where does this leave us? I think whoever wrote this wanted us to know that dealing with the descendents of Ishmael was going to be a world wide problem. Judaism preaches that eventually the Muslims will make peace with the Jews, because Ishmael finally made peace with Isaac, Abraham's Jewish son. But how we get from here to there is anyone's guess!

Hey Neal, Awesome to finally hear from you! I did a google search on that quote and found that it seems to be a real quote from the Koran, but the problem is that some Muslims follow it and others don't. There are also many quotes in the Koran about killing infidels, so it seems that people pick and choose what they want to get out of it. They also interpret things in all kinds of ways.

Here, look at this from a Wikipedia article on a Muslim cleric:

After the September 11 attacks, Qaradawi, urging Muslims to donate blood for the victims of the attacks, stated that:
"Islam, the religion of tolerance, holds the human soul in high esteem, and considers the attack against innocent human beings a grave sin, this is backed by the Qur'anic verse which reads: Who so ever kills a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and who so ever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind," (Al-Ma'dah:32).
"The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said, 'A believer remains within the scope of his religion as long as he doesn't kill another person illegally'"
"Islam never allows a Muslim to kill the innocent and the helpless."

So, so far, he seems like a reasonable and holy man. Yet the article continues:

Qaradawi strongly supports Palestinian attacks on Israeli targets, including against civilians and claim they are legitimate form of resistance. Qaradawi also claims that hundreds of other Islamic scholars are of the same opinion.

Defending bombing against Israeli civilians Qaradawi told BBC Newsnight that:
* "An Israeli woman is not like women in our societies, because she is a soldier."
* "I consider this type of martyrdom operation as an evidence of God's justice."
* "Allah Almighty is just; through his infinite wisdom he has given the weak a weapon the strong do not have and that is their ability to turn their bodies into bombs as Palestinians do".
* "Everything will be on our side and against Jews on [Judgment Day], at that time, even the stones and the trees will speak, with or without words, and say: 'Oh servant of Allah, oh Muslim, there's a Jew behind me, come and kill him.'"

That last quote is also in the "holy" Koran. So this proves that people can twist anything that is written to justify whatever they want. The bottom line is that Muslim clerics are often quoted as calling for the killing of innocent Jews (and others), including women and children. But there are virtually no rabbis in the world who utter such vile comments about Muslims. Nor are there Christian priests and ministers saying such things. Nor are Buddhist or Hindu leaders saying such things. One has only to open his eyes to see what is going on here.

The Torah has its own quote about the Muslims. Actually it is a prophecy about Ishmael, the son of Abraham, from whom the Muslims claim to descend. Prophecies about patriarchs are meant to predict the future of their decendents. It says, "He will be a wild ass of a man. His hand will be upon everyone, and everyone's hand will be upon him. And he will dwell in the face of his brethren forever".

Don't you think the Jews of 3,500 years ago already knew what many in the world are just finding out now?

Hey Von Cello,

I saw this today in an online dictionary site. I thought it was interesting, but I don't really believe it.

"The Islamic holy scriptures are contained in the Qur'an (formerly Koran). The Qur'an teaches, among much else, that "Whosoever kills a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and whosoever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind" (Al-Ma'dah: 32). For this reason most Muslims do not sympathize with terrorism."

I was driving home yesterday from Dutchess County where I hiked up a mountain in Beacon. I heard a radio show in which someone said that the "Old Testament" had a vengeful God who destroyed people who didn't follow his ways, and it wasn't until Jesus that the concept of a loving God appeared. First of all, that is a total misreading of the Jewish Bible. But then, this commentator went on to say that the Jews are still a people of vengence, and that is why Israel is attacking Lebanon. He never mentioned that Hezbollah had been shooting hundreds of rockets into Israel for months before Israel finally retaliated. He also missed the point that Israel is not seeking vengence. It is trying to remove a very real and dangerous threat from its border.

Does this commentator remember what the United States did when the Soviets tried to put missles in Cuba? We were ready to start a nuclear war! And President Kennedy, and most of his advisors were Chrstians.

One of the saddest things in the world today is how people continue to misunderstand the Bible, and use it to come to unjustifiable conclusions.

On a lighter note, I played a gig on a roof garden on top of one of the buildings in Rockefeller Center. It was great to play up there with a view of all the great midtown buildings. How lucky we are in America to not have groups like Hezbollah and Hamas on our borders!
