It's Greek to me

I had an interesting exchange with a guy from Greece on this page:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qcW9bOJcJo&feature=email

He claims to have nothing against the Jews yet he accuses Judaism as being "packed with hatred and genocide" and accuses Jews of celebrating hate during their holidays.

I tried to reason with him for a few days but after a while he seemed to me to be just another brainwashed anti-Semite. Attack, attack, attack.

As old as I get I don't understand where this comes from. I don't go around attacking the Greeks and calling their culture packed with hatred, and their holidays hate celebrations. I couldn't even imagine doing this. What is this sickness that makes so many people think it is acceptable to do this to the Jews?

Ben Bernacke on Sax!

The Head of the Federal Reserve, from Wikipedia -

Bernanke was educated at East Elementary, J. V. Martin Junior High, and Dillon High School, where he was class valedictorian and played saxophone in the marching band.[19] Since his high school did not offer calculus, he learned it on his own.[20][21] Bernanke achieved a SAT score of 1590 out of 1600.[20][22] He was also an All-State saxophonist, playing in the school's marching band.[23] Bernanke attended Harvard University, where he lived in Winthrop House and graduated with a B.A. in economics summa cum laude in 1975. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979. His thesis was named "Long-term commitments, dynamic optimization, and the business cycle" and his thesis adviser was Stanley Fischer.[24]

I belong to Anatevka...

I wonder why there is such an urge for people from Canarsie to put on a map the address where they used to live. It's not like it was a prestigious place to live. In fact, it was a forgotten corner of Brooklyn populated by middle and lower middle class people, many of whom were dying to get out of there (myself included). I have noticed that most people don't seem to care much about the place they grew up, unless it was an amazing place. But then again, maybe Canarsie was amazing in certain ways. Did you ever see Fiddler on the Roof? The song Anatevka is very relevant to Canarsie. I suppose it was the 2nd Anatevka. A place where Jews from Anatevka went for a generation until they could get their feet wet and move on to the rest of America.

The odds

The weird thing is I knew the wife was going to say Canarsie and then when she said it I had this feeling like she was someone I grew up with. We discovered that they were from the other side of Canarsie so I didn't know them but there was something familiar when I looked in their eyes. I think they got a kick out of realizing that I was from Canarsie too.

Grateful Party Hosts

Today I played a gig at an outdoor party over in Nyack, NY. with a trio from the Grateful Strings. We played Grateful Dead tunes and other things from country to jazz. The house was on a country road with a yard that had a vegetable garden and a chicken coop. I asked the couple who lived there if they were from there and they said they were from Brooklyn. I said, "Where in Brooklyn", and they said, "Canarsie"!
