How open is your mind?

Every few days I have new people emailing me to become "friends" on Myspace. By the way, you can find me there at:

http://www.myspace.com/voncello.

I find it interesting who decides to seek to become a "friend". A friend really is just someone who wants their link and picture on your page, but I guess people put some thought into who's page they want to be on. I find that I tend to get the more "experimental" types. Usually they are into the cello or some kind of modern progressive music.

The thing I find in general about people who claim to be "open minded" is that they are only open minded to a set of acceptable things to be open minded about. For instance, it is acceptable to be open minded about atheism, or eastern religions, but not about Orthodox Judaism! Or it is okay to be open minded about communism or socialism, but not about capitalism!

The ironic thing is that when you are only open minded about a certain closed set of ideas...then you are really not open minded at all! I think it was this kind of thing that Zappa was talking about when he said, "Take the day and walk around. Watch the Nazis run your town. Then go home and check yourself. You think we're singing about someone else"!

Yo Yo-Yo

Well, I mentioned the radio show. As for appearances, I tend to do that in the email list letter. In the winter most music groups hold back on touring. The attendence is better in the warmer months and you don't have to worry about snow or intense cold.

I have been spending time in West Hartford Connecticut the past few months recording the new Von Cello CD. That is where the keyboardist Scott Guberman lives. Just last night we were doing a version of "Bird Song" by the Dead for cello and piano. It's a cool idea...and something even Yo-Yo Ma couldn't do!

Move On.org

So I was on the Joey Reynolds show and got to play a new song that has contemporary lyrics about an older woman "taking advantage" of a younger man. It will be on the new CD and it is called...da, da, da, da: "You Took Advantage of Me".

Joey and his guests were laughing throughout the song and there were robust applause at the end. It was a fun night that began with me at the Waldorf playing for the Viennese Opera Ball. Among the guests...the Dutchess of York (Fergie) and Miss Universe. Do a search on her and you will be jealous to know that she was standing just a few feet from me on the stage. Yow!

Q: What do you get when you mix holy water with castor oil?

A: A religious movement!

Some kind of a joke

So we have established that No Soap Radio is "some kind of a joke". We also have discovered that it first started in the 1940's. But my question is by who?????

Don't you wonder who starts these things? Like who started saying "right on", or "cool beans", or "hey man", or "word"?

"Whasssssoap"?

So Aaron, what's with your expression "No Soap Radio"?
You've used the phrase several times since you came on my show for that awesome interview and performance. Do you mean that the radio industry is "dirty" and needs to "clean up"? Is it a refference to TV soap operas?
Are you planning to produce a series of cello rock podcasts on the internet with the title "No Soap Radio"? I am correct in assuming you yourself use soap, aren't I?

Or do you actually mean "No Soup" Radio? Eating is not allowed in the WWPV studio, though most student DJ's disregard this most of the time. (Inlcuding me!)
I'd let you endulge in some Matzoh ball soup when you come back to PV.....I'm no soup nazi, you can be sure of it.

Meds and Drugs

Hendrix said in "Are You Experienced?", "Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful". I think what he was saying is that there was a difference between your average high on pot or pills and the spiritual experience one could have with psychedelics. It was the latter that inspired the Dead and the Beatles and others. It was the latter that inspired the Pranksters to send a bus across the USA which became immortalized in songs like "Magic Bus", "Magical Mystery Tour", and "The Other One".

No a days, my drug of choice has been coffee. But with my blood pressure inching up, I'm wondering how good that is. By the way, when coffee first came to Europe, it was considered such a powerful drug that all kinds of art was inspired by it. Most famous of all would be Bach's "Coffee Cantata". If he were alive in the sixties he might have written an "Acid Cantata".

You may need some coffee tonight to catch me on JOEY REYNOLDS on WOR, FM.

i think drugs were like the dorm whore,,everybody said they were with her but some lied
dtugs may have caysed some to prematuely have ideas that they would have had later on thus causing them to walk the unbeaten path at 18 instead of at 28
it caused me study more and screw more girls asat gainesville college the drug enjoyers were always kissing and studying while the non users watched tv down the hall....wierd is that the common mary jane or coke is nothin compared to the pills my friends take today for antidepression , heart treatment and wake up and goto sleep helpers.....except they don get laid as we did it back then

No Soap Radio

If you are up late tonight, check me out on the JOEY REYNOLDS SHOW. I"ll be on at 2 A.M. EST. Out in California that's only 11 P.M. For those of you in Spain...you can probably catch the show somewhere on the internet.

I will be on along with a cellist/actress who calls her act, "Erin and her cello". So we will have Aaron and Erin together for the first time! It will be a night of sheer cello madness!

All You Need Is...

I am not saying that drugs are good. Nor am I saying that they are bad. All I am saying is that drugs, particularly LSD, had a big influence on what happened in the sixties. Was it for the better or the worse? That is debatible, but that drugs had a strong influence...that is a fact.

Just ask yourself if these things would have occured without the influence of drugs:

The Grateful Dead
The Beatles Sgt. Pepper
Peter Max
Andy Warhol
Tie dies
Jack Keroack
Ken Kesey
The Pranksters
Eastern religious influence
Jesus freaks
Woodstock
Jimi Hendrix
Flower Power
Long hair
Bell bottoms
Yellow Submarine
Timothy Leary
Tune in, turn on, and drop out
Communes
The Generation Gap
Back to nature
New Age
Candles, black lights, lava lamps
Trying to levitate the Pentagon
Hippie chicks
Free love

You would still have had the civil rights movement, an anti war movement, rock n' roll, and a women's movement...but none would have fully flowered as they did, and much of the art and culture would have stayed more like the fifties. Just look at the art of people before and after drug use. The Beatles are a prime example. Compare "Meet the Beatles" with "Magical Mystery Tour". That explains everything.

Here Comes The Magic Bus......

Von Cello Wrote:

Wow....talk about being controversial....about just comming out and saying something! Since I did not grow up in the Sixties, I think the appropriate thing would be to ask Aaron to explain his reasoning.

Perhaps I could talk about how without Nirvana and the grunge scene there wouldn't have been good music in the Nineties....Though I'd have to do a little research first.....Ugh!

Local Localities

Joe's Garage? Warren's Restaraunt? Alice's Restaraunt wouldn't happen to be on the same block, would it? Remember you can get anything you want there, except for Alice.

lets imagine that drugs had not been on the scene in the 70s How might your life have been and today be different? this statement does not in any way imply a previous use of drugs on my part nor yours...

Good stuff...

I don't know whether to be impressed or grossed out. A "self modeled adult toy"...hmmm. Could you imagine other rock stars doing that? I don't know. I just couldn't see Jerry Garcia doing that. Maybe Pig Pen, but more like David Lee Roth or that guy from Kiss...Gene Simmons. Heck, he'd do anything for money. What about politicians? I couldn't see Joe Lieberman doing it. But maybe Bill Clinton! I would say it takes balls to do that...but actually it doesn't. Get it?
