There is great discussion posted on Israel National Radio today. Two young Orthodox Jews discuss how Jews should relate to the Christian world. They also discuss Jews for Jesus. This is particularly relevent because a major Christian organization has called for Christians to again missionize Jews.

Hmmm...I should know of these people, but sadly I don't. The cello is such a beautiful instrument...it's unfortunate that there have not been recognizable cellists except for Yo-Yo Ma and now, Aaron Minsky. I think it's great that the NY Cello Society exists. Keep up the good work!
So let us:
Drink to the cello,
and drink to the celtar.
Let's drink for all cello players
who live near and live far.
Let's drink for all composers,
for those from whom great works have been thunk,
And the people who don't recognize greatness,
Well, they must all be punch drunk!
(Boy, your drinking song has become quite a fun addition to the guestbook here. Maybe we could trade a few new verses when you come back on my show to promote the "Celtar" album).

Tonight at the New York Cello Society they had a meeting in honor of Esther Prince who was the secretary for several decades. But she was really the glue that held the organization together, and became kind of the mother of all cellists.

LN, perhaps this article explains your strong feelings about Islam:
Here is a quote:
But he does want to create a stir. 'Islam is something we can't afford any more in the Netherlands. I want the fascist Koran banned. We need to stop the Islamisation of the Netherlands. That means no more mosques, no more Islamic schools, no more imams... Not all Muslims are terrorists, but almost all terrorists are Muslims.'
Free speech or hate speech? 'I don't create hate. I want to be honest. I don't hate people. I don't hate Muslims. I hate their book and their ideology.'
For more than three years, Wilders has been paying for his 'honesty' by living under permanent police guard as the internet bristles with threats on his life. He has lived in army barracks, in prisons, under guard at home. 'There's no freedom, no privacy. If I said I was not afraid, I would be lying.'
There is little doubt that if Wilders's film exists - and it's shrouded in secrecy - and is broadcast, it will be construed as blasphemy in large parts of the world and may spark a new bloody crisis in relations between the West and the Muslim world.
He does not seem to care. 'People ask why don't you moderate your voice and not make this movie. If I do that and not say what I think, then the extremists who threaten me would win.'

I think you are the first person who ever commented about my "Drinking Song"! So I thank you for that. My comments about it never making it into the Top 40, or Top 100, or even on the chart described my feeling about it at the time. I always liked it but thought it lacked commercial appeal. Yet it would actually be a fun song to sing in a beer hall, a bar, or even a restaurant that serves wine. One of my favorite lines is:
Drink to the C bomb.
And drink to the anti-C bomb.
And drink to the anti anti-C bomb.
And drink to the D bomb!
That song, and my performance on that tape, are from when I was around 16 years old. I strikes me now that I probably could have had a career as a teenage Cat Stevens or something back then. But part of the problem was that by the time I was 17 the disco era was blooming like a dirty fungus, and there was no more interest in witty singer/songwriters. Everyone just wanted to dance.
"Stayin alive, staying alive. Ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin aliveiaiveaive..."
Tape recorders were the best! I may possibly be the first musician in history to have archived tapes of his music and thoughts from his early teens... especially in such a systematic way. I always hoped that somehow I would achieve some level of fame, and that the early days of my creative life would be of interest to someone, somewhere. But I would recommend to anyone to tape thoughts and even sounds. On some of my tapes just the sound of Manhattan traffic circa 1982 brings back a flood of memories.
Don't you wish Beethoven had a tape recorder?
| Green beer, dead Moses and tapes from the past....
Charelton Heston bit the big one? Didn't he once say he'd give up his guns "over his cold dead hands"? How ironic.......Heston was of course a big National Rifle Association supporter.
And I am proud of my state's green....which is quite green. I have never been to Ireland or England so I guess I just assumed they were more green then Vermont was out of the fact that I dream of visiting those countries....Ireland is (one of my many) my ancestral homelands and so I guess I have a bit of "hero worship' for it.
Great job with your Celtar tape, and your rendition of Fiddler's Green. I also enjoyed your "Drinking Song". Here's my own verse:
Drink for the smiles
and drink for the frowns,
drink heartedly for the clown,
who has soiled his evening gown.
I used to have a tape recorder but I must have missplaced it while moving after college. you have inspired me to record myself with my own songs, philosophies and what have you....what a great way for people to remember you when you pass from this world.
| A Light to the Nations
I was listening to Israel National Radio this week and one host said that some rabbis are now saying that it is time for Jews to come forward as advocates for the Torah view on how Gentiles should worship. For centuries Jews have been afraid to speak out to the Gentile world. After all, not that long ago a Jew who did this would likely be tried for blasphemy and killed. So Jews have learned to keep their ideas to themselves. But some rabbis are now saying that because of innovations such as the internet, and the fact that the Jews have a country from which they can speak about Judaism without fear from state sponsored persecution, the green light has been given to "spread the gospel" of Judaism. Judaism is not a religion that seeks converts, but there is a plan for Gentiles in the Jewish Bible that has been all but ignored over the centuries.
I tend to agree with this analysis. As I have been in music, I tend to be a bit ahead of the curve. But I see nothing wrong, and much right, with Jews telling Gentiles what we believe God wants from them. They have a right to reject our beliefs, just as we have a right to reject theirs. But why should people not speak out and try to educate each other in this day and age?

| God or god?
From a Jewish perspective there is only one God, so if Muslims are worshipping the "moon god" then they are wasting their efforts. But you have to realize that from a Jewish perspective the same is true of those who worship the "sun god", or should I say the "son god".
From a Jewish perspective, if you are not worshipping God directly, but using intermediaries, it is the same as worshipping false gods. In the Ten Commandments it says, "I am the Lord thy God ... You shall have no other gods." It is so simple, yet virtually all non-Jews went on to create their own types of deities that were different than the pure monotheistic vision of the one God of the Jewish Bible.
Jews and Christians do share a lot of values, but they also do not share some values. I know a lot of people talk about "Judeo-Christian" values, ideas, etc. But usually those who speak this way are Christians. Christians like to think of themselves as passing on the best of Judaism, but to many Jews they see them as contradicting the best of Judaism. So, unfortunately, there are tensions that go on generation after generation.
From a Jewish perspective I find it odd that people from one tradition that misinterpreted the Jewish ideas about God should get angry at another group of people that misinterpret the Jewish ideas about God. Both groups are misinterpreting Jewish scripture. One group says if the Jews don't believe in their idea of God they will go to hell, the other group says if the Jews don't believe in their idea of God they will go to hell. Hard to get too excited about which of these groups has a better take on who God really is and what He wants.

Remember a show on TV called "Mod Squad"? Could you imagine such a show today? It had this very cute tall thin sunglasss-wearing blond, a nondescript white guy, and a hip black dude with an afro named Link. Anyway, if someone wants to post a link on this guestbook, just write it down with the http://

Speaking of African Americans...yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Recently I have heard some radio shows that claimed that he wasn't killed by lone wacko James Earl Ray, but that he was killed by the government of the USA. USA, James Earl Ray, CIA, LBJ...sorry, was having a 60's moment there.
Just check this out:
