Video Killed the Radio Star

I have a video "in the can" as they say. It is a real rock video for one of the new tunes on the Celtar CD. It needs some editing before it can be released. I hope to have it up within a month. I also plan to make several videos in front of the webcam this summer. Maybe we can talk about how to do that.

In the meantime I just posted some video of a clubdate band and a couple of strolling violinists who I have hired through my company Castle Dream Productions.

Go here: http://www.castledreamproductions.com/
And click on the Video link.

What's up Doc?

Tonight I played for 100 nuero-surgeons. I know... it sounds like a joke. But it was a testimonial dinner for the head of the surgery department at Columbia Presbyterian... or some such hospital, at the Yale Club in midtown Manhattan. The same violinists that did El Caribe were on this one too. This is one of the best parts of being a musician, the fact that you get to see so many different slices of life.

Did I say slices?

Circle Game

Today I came full circle. When I was growing up in Canarsie I used to play club date gigs on guitar. When I started to play cello I felt that the cello and classical music would be a way to get out of that scene. But today I was back in Canarsie playing a club date on cello! We had a gig at El Caribe in Mill Basin.

Harvey

Not many people named Harvey anymore. Did you know Harvey Kayro? He was one of the Canarsie icons of our youth. I remember Harvey Korman. He was a great straight man on the Carol Burnett show. I never put it together that he had the same last name as our friend Neil. I wonder if they were a distant relation.

Funny thing... I just took the trip I took with you with my wife. We went to visit Neil this past weekend but stopped off first in Warwick. We had a slice at that same pizza shop. Then we saw Neil and his wife and two sons. We got dinner at a nice new restaurant that is on a lake near his house. There is a whole strip of restaurants there now. I guess the business folks figure they will get the overflow from the new music complex on the site of Woodstock.

Yes, the icons of our childhood are slowly receeding into history. Makes you realize that we are getting there too. I went to a memorial of a friend from Manhattan this week. A guy in his late 50's. Died of a heart attack. Someone brought a picture of him as a young teen standing with some friends at the original Woodstock Festival smoking a "peace pipe". Our generation did it's dance, made some noise, and now are slowly fading away.

The Dead used to sing "Not Fade Away", but fade away we must. Even many of the Dead are dead. But I wonder if they are still Grateful.

Go Hagee Go

To apply this to Hagee... he was talking about the idea that God had predicted the Holocaust and used it as a way to return the Jews to Israel. That to me is not a controversial thought at all. If one really studies the Jewish scriptures I think they will see that this is a reasonable intepretation of various prophecies. So what is wrong with Hagee pointing this out?

I guess some people do not want "religion" to apply to anything but their own internal thoughts, but to me that is putting God in a box. Didn't Jethro Tull sing, "He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sunday."

Ouch

Granted, he said, "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's", but he still got involved in criticizing many people in the power structure of Israel. He criticized the leadership of the Pharesee sect, which were the majority of Jews. He apoke out often about what he felt were injustices. He also became an activist and actually whipped those who were lending money in front of the Temple! (Of course, I have heard it argued that there was nothing wrong with lending money in front of the Temple, but that is another story.) Surely Jesus went beyond the non-violent civil disobediece of Ghandi and Martin Luther King. Could you imagine if King took out a bullwhip and started to whip a store owner who wouldn't seat blacks, or a bus driver who sent a black to the back of the bus?

How my friend squares an activist Jesus with her concept that priests mustn't discuss politics at all, I do not know. I think people want to put Jesus, or whatever their image of God is, in a safe box where they can go to meditate and feel relief, rather than confronting the scriptures that describe the actions of those they diefy.

Wet Bones

Well, feel free to post it here.

I had a discussion with a friend who is a self proclaimed "conservative". She totally sided with McCain in repudiating Hagee. She said that politics has no place in religion. She goes to church to commune with God and if the priest speaks a word of politics she leaves.

But if I remember correctly, didn't Jesus make a few political comments himself?

Hat tip Dry Bones

Of course, the question of whether or not Jesus is the messiah remains a matter of disagreement, but I admire how Rev. Hagee does not let that one problem (however large it may be) get in the way of all of the things Jews and Christians have in common.

Exactly.

Credit where credit is due - I happened upon it today thru my daily read at Dry Bones - http://drybonesblog.blogspot.com/ and immediately had to think of the post I read here. I even left a comment at DB (I hardly ever do), but it got lost in the bitbucket it seems

Rev. Hagee

Late reaction after I read the post about Rev. Hagee - interesting to see what he wrote himself about it:

No time to make excerpts right now, it's worth a read.

Not Yet Beyond

All that is left is for me to take a picture for the back cover and to figure out how to link the new Bibliography to the table of contents. Do you happen to know how to do that in Word?

As for the picture, I am thinking about taking a picture of me in a yarmulka, tallis, and tefilen, playing the cello!

Beyond Faith

My book, Beyond Faith, is almost ready for submission. I would say it should be ready any day now. One of the things I have been waiting for is a statement from the illustrator. He just sent it to me, and here it is:

"I think of God as the Creator, consequently I believe that creativity is the way God expresses His vision. Having grown up in a Jewish family, with parents who were an artist and a musician, I was surrounded by the Creator though their creativity. Through the powerful forces of music and art I have found solutions for my own artistic expressions of creativity. Therefore, due to the combination of my Jewish and creative heritages, when Aaron Minsky spoke to me about participating in this project, I was happy to add my images to Beyond Faith."

Bombs Away

Why would you say that? I'm not angry or violent. I am merely stating what I believe to be the truth.

Anyway, I had a 21st century experience the other day. I was driving down the FDR highway in Manhattan at night when this car next to me starts honking. I look over and see that the driver is holding up some kind of little TV screen. Then I realize it is an iphone, and the image he had on it was of the voncello.com website!

I guess he saw my license plate that says VONCELLO, and then looked up the site on his iphone. Then he drove up next to me and honked so he could show me. How 21st century, man!

Bank Shmank!

The stereotype of Jews as bankers is actually very harmful. Of course, there are some Jews in the banking business, just as there are Christians, Muslims, Atheists, and Satanists. But the traditional anti-Semitic slander is that the Jews CONTROL the banks. They say that there are Jews, like the Rothschilds, who actually control all the banks in the world, thereby having access to unbelievable amounts of money through various schemes, and then using that money to control governments all around the world.

Now... is it possible that there is a group of people who are doing that? I would say yes. But to say that it is "The Jews" is where the anti-Semitism comes in. And when you portray a small ethnic or religious group as the ones who are controlling everything, then they become the target whenever anything goes wrong. So, if the price of oil goes up, or a war starts somewhere, or there is terrorism, or there are shortages of food or what-have-you, they blame it on "The Jews".

You don't see people blaming things like this on the Hispanics, or the Catholics, or the English, or even the Chinese, Arabs, or Russians. These are all much larger and much more powerful groups than the Jews. But the whole idea of anti-Semitism is to hide the reality that other groups have much more power, and get everyone to focus on the Jews.

There's a God damed radio station in New York called WBAI. It is part of the Pacifica Network of several stations throughout the country. They are having a fund raiser, since it is listener sponsored, and every day I have been hearing show after show about how Israel is part of a plan to dominate the world. Israel becomes the enemy of all who suffer, of all who are indigenous, of all who seek progress. It is a total reversal of reality. Why the constant picking on the Jews? It is a sickness that is so deep in our society that most people cannot even see it even though it is right in front of all our faces day by day.
