All for one

Sure, it would be great if like a human version of Noah's Ark he could have two of every group of people. But I think some Jews have been worried that he would be an anti-Israel president, and the fact that he has appointed a practicing Jew as chief of staff should provide some reassurance. And, because Israel is such a small country, and the only Jewish country in the world, Jews are reasonably concerned that any U.S. president should be supportive.

Speaking about Jews... yesterday I played for a very Chasidic wedding in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was one of these groups that puts up solid separation barrier between the men's party and the women's party, so much so that while I was playing I never saw a woman. But the men were very interested in classical music and gathered around us when we played. Then when the band played they made circles and danced around in a joyous manner. We were fed well and treated as special guests, which made for a very nice spirit amongst the musicians.

Obama

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3618543,00.html

In a move that should make many of the Jews who were against Obama feel some shame, Obama has announced his first pick for chief of staff, an Orthodox Jew! He is also reported to be bringing Kennedy's into the White House as well as Colin Powell. How about that!

Oh Bomber!

Where did you hear about how American Jews in Israel voted?

I know that there were a lot of scare tactics used to try to get Jews to think that Obama will favor the Arabs and be anti-Israel. I got a few emails about this, but the emails never said a word about all the things Bush did that were against Israel. That is what made me realize that these emails were totally political. I also heard a lot of anti Obama stuff on Israel National Radio that sounded pretty ignorant. Maybe Jews outside the U.S. were hit with a lot of propaganda and didn't hear the counter balancing information.

What is America?

Well, I guess last night proved that the country has shifted in certain ways, especially if your memory of it is from when we were kids. It is certainly less "white" than it was, and "minorities" have gotten a lot more power. There is greatness in the concept of America as a country where anyone can make it. Unfortunately the fact that one man who has a darker skin tone becomes president does not mean that the country has now undone all of the problems of recent years. Nor does it mean that Obama even wants to undo a lot of it.

Yes, there will be changes, but will they be only window dressing? There are still a lot of scary things going on in the background. We can only hope things will get better, and they are better on the surface, but is the surface change a smokescreen hiding the same underlying agenda?

Be scared. Be very scared!

Steven Marcus Speechless?!!!

Forget Obama, I never thought I would live to see the day that Steven Marcus was speechless!

Tell us more. Why are you speechless?

(Actually, if you are speechless, how can you tell us anything?)

Dead Cello Lives!

I think many of you will be pleased to hear that Dead Cello received its premiere by famous concert cellist Jeffrey Solow at the Salon in Philidelphia! He reported a great audience response.

Mr. Solow will play it next at a recital at Temple University on Dec. 1st, where he is the head of the string department.

In March he will play it in New York, actually in Brooklyn at Bargemusic. Perhaps some of my New York friends will want to show up.

In for the long haul...

Von Cello will be playing this Sunday, tomorrow, for the NYC Marathon. This year we will be at the main stage on Central Park South and 7th Ave. from 11:15 - 1:15.

Along with yours truly will be Robert Politzer and Mark Paradis on guitars, Scott Guberman on keys and John DiGuillio on drums. Of course, all will be singing too!

See you there!

Correction

Sorry, I forgot about the first Star Spangled Banner I posted. It's almost up to 12,000 hits. I also find it interesting that Someone to Watch Over Me is now over 500 hits in a couple of months. I also find it interesting to see how the pieces from Ten International Cello Encores are doing. For instance I did not expect that New Orleans Jazz Man would lead the pack, nor did I think Ode to the World would be hovering at the back.

Not that any of this means anything. But I find it a fun diversion.

Dance With Me

Today we had the fundraiser for Congressman John Hall at my home. Along with him was Congresswoman Rosa Delauro of Connecticut, who I found out is second only to Nancy Pelosi in Congress. She gave a remarkable speech that had everyone mesmerized.

I got to play "Dance With Me" along with bass and drums for John Hall. He was beaming during the performance and finally sang along in the last chorus as if unable to hold back from the emotions I was sending out. Everyone loved the music and I have a feeling I will be doing more playing for the Democrats.

I gave out my new CD to the guests. I mentioned that I played the cello like a guitar on the CD like I do in the picture on the cover. One man said he saw the picture but thought it was a joke. I said, "No, its been my calling since I was in high school."

Isn't there a quote something like, "First they laugh at you, then they get scared of you, then they attack you, then you win."

Unsung Heroes

Maryann MaPartlan is one of those unsung heroes. She is a great musician but is not known by the general public. There are other great musicians who are even less known. Take Ray Cohen. I played a Waltz Night with him last night with a small group. During band breaks he would play "cocktail" music, which basically means improvised arrangements of American Standards. There were times when he was playing when I closed my eyes and I felt like I was listening to a great classical composition. He finds meaning in tunes that most people just throw off. He does intricate lines and chords, and he paints scenes that sound more like Brahms or Mendelssohn than Richard Rogers or Irving Berlin. The man is a genius, yet he never cut a CD, he's never been on TV or the radio. He just plays the New York party circuit, as he has for about fifty years!

Sure, he makes top dollar for the club date business. Sure, he never had to teach or do anything for a living but play the piano. Sure, many of the richest people in New York demand that he be hired when they throw a party or a large event, but outside of that circle he is virtually unknown. An unsung hero.

He alwyas asks me about Von Cello, which I take as a compliment. I wish I cuuld tell him that we are touring the world, or that our CD is shooting up the charts. I suppose I am better known then he, but I'm far from being "famous". I suppose I'm a bit of an unsung hero myself. Imagine if Eric Clapton never got that big break. He could have been a fine session guitar player, doing recordings for singners, and playing club dates and doing some teaching on the side. Maybe a better example is Van Morrison. He easilly could have been a lounge singer if he didn't get those few hits when he was young. A lot of the music business is based on luck or connections. There are so many musicians out there who are as good or better than most of what the public sees. They are the unsung heroes, just as there are unsung heroes in every field. Some get the honor and the glory, but sometimes the truly great go unnoticed or barely noticed.

All The Things You Are

I remember Aaron's video of All The Things You are from a few weeks ago.
Today I was checking out the NPR website. They have a jazz show that was a tribute to Marian McPartland's 90th birthday.
To close the show, Wynton Marsalis joins Marian McPartland's trio on stage to play All The Things You Are.
Wynton can really play.
