In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

The History of the Jews in Europe, Pt. 112

Several centuries ago, the Pope decreed that all the Jews had to convert to Catholicism or leave Italy. There was a huge outcry from the Jewish community, so the Pope offered a deal.

He'd have a religious debate with the leader of the Jewish community. If the Jews won, they could stay in Italy; and if the Pope won, they'd have to convert or leave.

The Jewish people met and picked an aged and wise rabbi to represent them in the debate. However, as the rabbi spoke no Italian, and the Pope spoke no Yiddish, they agreed that it would be a "silent" debate.

On the chosen day the Pope and rabbi sat opposite each other.

The Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers.
The rabbi looked back and raised one finger.

Next, the Pope waved his finger around his head.
The rabbi pointed to the ground where he sat.

The Pope brought out a communion wafer and a chalice of wine.
The rabbi pulled out an apple.

With that, the Pope stood up and declared himself beaten and said that the rabbi was too clever. The Jews could stay in Italy.

Later the cardinals met with the Pope and asked him what had happened.

The Pope said, "First I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity. He responded by holding up a single finger to remind me there is still only one God common to both our beliefs."

"Then, I waved my finger around my head to show him that God was all around us. He responded by pointing to the ground to show that God was also right here with us."

"I pulled out the wine and wafer to show that God absolves us of all our sins. He pulled out an apple to remind me of the original sin."

"He beat me at every move and I could not continue."

Meanwhile, the Jewish community gathered to ask the rabbi how he'd won.

"I haven't a clue," the rabbi said.

"First, he told me that we had three days to get out of Italy, so I gave him the finger."

"Then he tells me that the whole country would be cleared of Jews and I told him that we were staying right here."

"And then what?" asked a woman.

"Who knows?" said the rabbi. "He took out his lunch so I took out mine."

NYC Marathon

Von Cello played the NYC Marathon for the 6th or 7th year in a row. (Yeah, I lost count!) It was a great day, sunny, and not too cold. With me was Scott Guberman on keys, Mark Paradis on vocals, and Nadav Snir on drums. A truly great band.

One highlight was a version of Space Oddity by David Bowie. Mark and Scott did a fantastically accurate vocal harmony and Nadav caught all the changes. As for me, well, I just played along sparingly but tastily. The crowd loved it. Another highlight was the Dead's Shakedown Street going into Dedado's 2001 theme, and back!

I have pictures and video footage that I hope to post sometime soon.

Hm, something has changed there or what? It used to be that you could sort out the English subtitled clips.
Try this or else, sort by most popular.
(Hey, it's hard for me too - use it to practice my Hebrew, but need the subtitles 'cs it's way to fast and too witty with all those puns!)

Latma - Israeli satire

We did a cool medley of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" going into "Riders on the Storm" and back! I wish I'd been able to hear that medley!

On another note - Aaron, do you follow this YT-channel LatmaTV ?
? Rare true satire ...

Rock Gig for Two

Tonight I played a gig with a guitarist and me on cello. We played all classic rock. It was for a doctor and his new wife. The cocktail hour lasted two hours and we played it way upstairs in this building:

Just a few blocks from where I used to live. We played a lot of great tunes including Deal, Sunshine of Your Love, Rambling Man, Here Comes the Sun, Honkey Tonk Women, Crazy Fingers. We did a cool medley of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" going into "Riders on the Storm" and back! I don't know how I came up with that but it just seemed to flow even with the key change from Eb to Em and back!

NYC Marathon

Another year has gone by and it's time once again for Von Cello to play at the NYC Marathon next week. Here's the clip from last year:

It will be the same keys and guitar but a new drummer, Nadav Snir, who has played with Von Cello on and off for years!

For the Record...

Just did a recording with Tonya Carmen. She was the lead singer of my band Smooth Groove back in the '80's. She was singing along with orchestrations I made for my Broadway Show!

Check her out:

There is a surprise ending!

Some good ones...

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car.

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on the list.

We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

Amalek and more cello impro - Zapp

That is one long discussion there! I took a quick look over at the first (Macedonian) commenter's own channel - many posts he wrote were interspersed with foul language. Pfff. Why in the world is it so hard to have a decent exchange of thoughts or discuss opinions ...

Ever come across the Zapp String Quartet? Like here ?

Celtar is cool!

That's cool. It's nice to see the cello being used more and more in pop music... even in Taiwan.

Here is a fun celtar video that needs on hit to reach 3000:

Is the Bible Evil?

I just had an interesting discussion on the page of this video:

Do you know about Amalek? The interactions between this tribe and Israel are some of the most controversial in the Bible. A poster tried to argue that the Bible should actually be considered evil due to this episode. I think I did a good job of exposing his hypocrisy.

I would bet most Jews know nothing about this. Not because it is hidden from them, but most Jews are pretty secular these days and don't study the Bible in any depth. Many have never even read the whole thing.

You may have noticed that our recent posts have disappeared! It seems the server I'm on is going a bit haywire lately. (Finally got to use "haywire" in a sentence!) Not much we can do. Those posts have gone into a black hole in cyberspace.
