Von Cello Email List! (vol. 5)

Hello List Members,

Happy New Year! There’s certainly going to be some changes around here! I’ll tell you about changes in the band, and I’ll give you a chance to win a prize just for listening to my CD and writing a few sentences. Let’s start with the prize...

THE VON CELLO CD CONTEST

First read this: In a controversial move, the NARAS
classical committee just took a CD that
was entered in this year's Grammys in
the Classical Crossover category and
moved it into the Pop Vocal category!
The CD was rock cellist Von Cello's CD,
"Breaking The Sound Barriers." Von
Cello intentionally created a CD that
would break the traditional barriers
between classical music and rock. It was
therefore entered under Classical
Crossover, but the classical committee
said no!

That is the opening paragraph for the Von Cello CD Contest (sponsored by Musicdish and Indiebiz, two leading independent internet music companies)! All you have to do to win prizes worth up to $100 is to listen to my CD and write a few sentences about whether or not you feel it is a classical crossover CD or a Vocal Pop CD. The winners’ comments will also be posted on my website and the Musicdish website. And (I just thought of it) here too! So please enter today. Here is the link with all the details:

VON CELLO WANTS YOU!

Well it must be growing pains, but Von Cello, the band, is looking for a new bass player. The main reason is that we need a bassist who can sing. Being a power trio, of electric cello, bass and drums, we found that vocal harmonies are important for filling out the sound. So if anyone knows of a bassist/singer with rock attitude and great chops, in the New York area, tell them to check out my website and send an email.

This will mean that we won’t be playing live for a few more months. (We were so close!) But, this is part of what you have to expect when you have a band. I once got a fortune from a fortune cookie that said, “Life always gets harder near the summit”.

THE ENDPIN

(The endpin is the metal piece attached to the bottom of a cello, so in this final section I will pin some final thoughts.)

When I started this email list letter, I said that I would share with you the good and the bad as I struggle to bring the cello into the center stage of rock. We were just at the point of booking gigs when the problem above hit us. I know that pushing Von Cello will be like running an obstacle course, or more appropriately, like fighting a war. You make a dash for the hill, then you retreat, regroup and try again. In life, you have to go down to go up. It’s true. Try to jump up...you’ll see that you first have to bend your knees and go down.

Here’s hoping that all this year’s downs go up!
