Von Cello Email List! (vol. 4)

Hello List Members,

Welcome new and old members! This month I have some surprises. Let’s start things off with my latest press release.

VON CELLO ENTERS HISTORY!

Von Cello, the rock cellist, has just received an incredible honor: his “Ten American Cello Etudes” (composed under the name Aaron Minsky) has been added to the very prestigious list known as, “A Guide to the Standard Cello Repertoire” by Jeffrey Solow.
Standard cello repertoire is music that is played by most of the world’s cellists and tends to remain popular for many generations. You could say that Von Cello has had a brush with immortality!

Jeffrey Solow is a renowned concert cellist who has performed as a soloist with many of the world’s top orchestras and has recorded on several record labels. He has also taught at several universities and has written extensively about the cello and it’s repertoire. Mr. Solow has also taken it upon himself to create a list of all of the pieces of music that are now considered to be the core of the contemporary cello literature. This includes the famous Bach Cello Suites, the Beethoven Sonatas, and the Dvorak Concerto. His category “Etudes and Studies” includes all the famous etudes that are studied and enjoyed by most cellists the world over. Names like Popper and Piatti come to mind. Into this category he has included Minsky!

Here is the relevant part of Mr. Solow’s list:

Etudes and Studies

Klengel: Technical Studies Vol. I (scales)
Dotzauer: 113 Studies, Vol. I
A. Schroeder: 170 Foundation Studies, Vol. I (various composers)
Lee: 40 Melodic Studies, Op. 3]
Sevcek: 40 Variations, Op. 3 (originally for violin)]
..............................................
Cossmann: Exercises for developing agility, strength of fingers and purity of intonation
Feuillard: Left Hand Studies (Daily Exercises)
[Kummer: 10 Melodic Studies, Op. 57 (with 2nd cello)]
Dotzauer: 113 Studies, Vol. II
Schroeder: 170 Foundation Studies, Vol. II (various composers)
[Franchome: 12 Caprices, Op. 7]
[Minsky: 10 American Cello Etudes]
[Starker: An Organized Method of String Playing]
...............................................
Dotzauer: 113 Studies, Vol. III
Schroeder: 170 Foundation Studies, Vol. III (various composers)
Duport: 21 Etudes (with 2nd cello)
Popper: "12 Studies Preparatory to the High School of Cello Playing," Op. 76, No.1
..............................................
Popper: "High School of Cello Playing," Op. 73
Piatti: 12 Caprices, Op. 25
[Servais: 6 Caprices, Op. 11 (with 2nd cello)]
[Grützmacher: "Technology of Cello Playing," Op. 38, Vol. II (with 2nd cello)]

All of this just goes to show once again that Von Cello is not your average everyday rock star. Von Cello is the only rock artist who crossed over to classical music, gained respect, and then came back!

VON CELLO - THE BAND

Von Cello, the band is still in rehearsal. We would like to play out soon, but now that so many people have their expectations up, we feel responsible to put out the best show we can. Therefore we are going to keep rehearsing until we get it right! Hopefully just a few months more. Thanks to all who have shown so much interest.

VON CELLO - GROWING ON THE WEB

Two years ago, I did a search on Aaron Minsky and found one site. I recently found out that my name is popping up in many places throughout the internet. (Try doing a search on yourself, you may be surprised.) Below are just a few of the links that I found. Please check them out. It’s full of surprises!

THE ENDPIN

(The endpin is the metal piece attached to the bottom of a cello, so in this final section I will pin some final thoughts.)

In the last letter I spoke about Ken Martinson, the viola professor of SUNY Potsdam. Well, a day or so later I received an email from one of the good folks at Zeta music asking me why I didn’t mention that Ken is a Zeta Artist? We had some good jokes flying back and forth between us, but in the end I said that even though I am a Yamaha Artist, I would acknowledge Ken’s affiliation. After all, just because we endorse different products, that doesn’t mean that we’re in some kind of a war. (Let’s leave that to the Republicans and Democrats.)

It just goes to show you...a lot of important people are reading this list! (And that includes you!)

Thanks for your support.

P.S. Need a holiday gift idea? Anyone on this list who would like to order 5 or more of my CD’s before January 1st will receive a discount. The price will be $6.99 plus shipping at cost. One cello teacher on this list put in an order of 35, one for each of her students! Happy holidays!
